First print not aligned throughout print process

During my first print of the Prusa logo, about halfway through the print, the extruder moved to an offset location, and continued to print out of alignment with the object. I downloaded and installed the firmware from http://www.prusa3d.com/drivers/ and uploaded the sketch using the Arduino IDE. That seemed to make things worse, and the randomness is more prevalent now. I've attached an image of the logo print.

Re: First print not aligned throughout print process

Hi, can you check if the grub screw is tight enough in the belt pulley on X axis?

Yes, all grub screws are tight. Here's another print I just started after the firmware upgrade. This is only the second layer. Also notice how the extrusions are flat and pushed together.

I see you have a problem with both X and Y axes. Do Autohome from lcd menu and try to move the X and Y with hand, if you can, pulleys are not secured with grubscrews. How did you attach the belt pulleys to motor shafts?

After performing Auto Home, I cannot move either the X or Y axes by hand. The pulleys are secure.

Can you please post a picture of your wired electronics and endstop mounting?

Re: First print not aligned throughout print process

Can someone post a picture of the "grub" screw? I have no idea what that is. Thanks

Josef,

Thank you again for the reply. I've attached a series of pictures. It's hard to get a good image of the wiring, so I took a few angles. For some reason I cannot add more than 3 images, so I will make another post with 3 more images.

This is the grub screw in the pulley.

Here are images of the end stops for each axis. One note, I have noticed a few times when the x-axis moves left (all the way to the stop), it does not stop despite the fact that the end-stop button is being depressed. The z-axis stop works as expected, and I can't say if I've seen the y-axis stop in action.

Thank you again. The build was quite pleasant I'd like to add. Very nice printer, and the instructions were fantastic.

Re: First print not aligned throughout print process

Just by looking at it, I can't see any problem. But I will take a closer look in the morning (2AM here).

If it is not a big trouble, a short video of printer doing a the test print might be helpful.

Re: First print not aligned throughout print process

Josef,

Thank you for all of your assistance. You helped guide me toward the right solution. What had happened was the X and Y stops had been slightly pushed out of place and the Auto Home was not working properly. I discovered this while testing the switches with a continuity tester, and discovered that they were not being depressed during Auto Home. I previously had them in the proper position, but they were displaced when I accidentally printed an over-sized object. I've attached a few recent test prints after calibration. Things are looking much better.

Thanks.

Re: First print not aligned throughout print process

AWESOME! Thanks for letting me know. Can I ask you for your insight where to put a note about this in the manual/video etc. so other builders won't have this issue? Sometimes it's hard to think about this stuff out of the box when you built 100s of these :geek:

I have also experienced that both the X-axis as well as the Y-axis have moved past their endstops at several occasions. I checked the endstops with a multimeter and they seemed very stable. I have also secured the endstops with extra material in form of a rubber hose mounted behind the endstop on the steel rod. This has only happened when printing from SD card though.

Re: First print not aligned throughout print process

Henrik, the reason it would push past the end stop and then stop is because it would not hit the end stop to stop it. I had this same issue because the wires would hit the end stop before the end stop switch would hit the bearing. If that makes any sense? If you make sure your end stop is for sure getting hit it will stop. A way to test this is have the extruder all the way to the other side and hit auto home. On its way to the switch if you hit the switch and it stops you know the switch is working correctly.

Thank you guys for your feedback, I will try to make some printable endstop holders. You need to make the zipties really tight to hold steady.
