Disappointment

Since there is no true area for off-topic general posts I am posting this here.

What was once a great source for help and general discussion on the Original Prusa i3 printer has devolved into a place for name-calling and bickering.

When I was a new owner I had many questions and problems. I created most of the problems myself and was helped by the users here that either pointed out what I had done wrong or pointed me to the fix. There were times that I thought I was being talked down to but upon reflection I realized I was being pushed to find the answer on my own with a big finger pointing the way.

Over the last few weeks there has been an overwhelming shift into troll-like tendencies in many of the threads and is now forcing many of us to stop posting and possibly helping others.

While self policing is great it may be time for Josef Prusa to put in place a moderator to keep things civil.

I know this is rambling but I am no professional writer. These are just my thoughts.

Richard

Hi Richard

Thank you for posting this message and I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments.

I unreservedly apologise for my part in this mess.

I had intended to leave this forum a few weeks ago and I think it best that I now do so.

Re: Disappointment

Hi guys,

Peter brought this to my attention, thank you.
We are finishing mk2 so we are little unresponsive, I am sorry for this.

We are very open to suggestions, but first let me show you what we were looking at.

- Creating a knowledge base, for example we briefly tested Helpjuice https://prusa3d.helpjuice.com/18077-Electronics/printer-lcd-shows-maxtemp-error and seems nice.
- We also like Anspress very much https://anspress.io

Either one we choose should clear up the forum from newbie questions. Than the forum would be left for creative talk about 3D printing and general stuff. Another option is to migrate the forum into a Facebook/Google+/Reddit user groups + either Helpjuice or Anspress.

When I look at last weeks statistics, we dealt with 1000 tickets via email and anotehr 500 via Livechat. So my support staff could use a better structured online support as well.

Do you guys know some well working example how to structure this? And can someone help us implement it? 🙂

Re: Disappointment

Hi everyone,

My perception may be wrong I know, But it seems a few people here have been here for a long time. When someone else new here comes along and may know a bit, they are resented and any posts they make are challenged or derided. Admitting you are not right all the time, can come as a shock for an established person.

I have no axe to grind. I know some things and have acknowledged some I did not know or were better than my opinion here.. Respect is all that is needed.

Oil your bearing rods once in a while. Kissslicer seems abandoned except them in the know of their forum, and why not use the excellent settings and slic3r provided by Jospeh Prusa. I get fantastic prints.

Re: Disappointment

I would hate to think their is a clique here.

A common threat of so called established people on a site is to leave. They seek the adoration replies and requests to not leave. I would request Peter to not leave, he does give valuable information. Just try to adjust to someone new here, and not a newbie that has knowledge and something to give.

While your observation might be true, trying to point fingers and attribute the current mood on these forums to be only some people's fault (and also over-analysing the issue of them wanting to leave like that) isn't going to help at all, and will only make matters worse.

I am quite new to both these forums and to the 3D printing community, but I have already had discussions here where people are coming with fully incorrect answers to issues, and this is from members that aren't "veterans" too. When I have tried to point out these facts I have gotten some aggressive and arrogant replies, and it got clear to me that this or that person simply don't want to listen to what other people say. This is damaging to the community and we're all responsible to help maintain this community by always looking at how we behave, no matter if we've just got our first 3D printer or if we were one of the pioneers in the RepRap development.

HI Josef, having a knowledge base, and a way to contribute in a "Lesson learned" approach would be very nice to concentrate the common issue resolutions or tip & tricks provided by either PR or the community.

However, I really think you should dedicate someone to monitor, moderate and animate these forum, and providing the 'official voice' from PR. Dedicating someone from PR team seems logical for me, but that point is debatable. Contributors like Peter invested a lot of their personal time to assist and help users, and this is obviously exhausting and not viable in a long term point of view. I can understand that you are pretty busy, but an official regular presence seems unavoidable.

Please do not take it as a rant, but as a new user genuine observation.

(and I just can't wait to see what's hidden behind mk2)

Re: Disappointment

I struggle to find people technical enough to do the forums. PR are regular guys with soft skills and we teach them technology. But I think here for the forum and community managment we need it other way around, technical first.

If anyone here wants to cooperate with us little closer or even have this as a job. Don't hesitate to contact me directly.

I am really sorry I am not here as much lately, so I will give you a sneak peek of something as a little excuse 🙂

Re: Disappointment

Oh man, that looks just sooooo sweet !

lots of thinks can be guessed from this photo that I like 🙂

Please please tell us there is a "reasonable" (affordable) upgrade path for i3 users ! Please !

Regarding the priority of skills, I do not share your point of view. I would tend to prefer soft skill first, such as knowing how to manage, animate a community, resolve conflict and maintain the general communication in the community in a good spirit. Regarding technical questions, since it's not a real time answer that are needed, they can can be gathered internally during the learning curve. Someone able to learn seems in my point of view preferable to someone how already knows, but lacks in communication.

if I had known, I would have waiting 😉

If I may say about the forum, I agree with Christophe's idea.

Re: Disappointment

@ Jospeh

Thanks for the teasing image.

I hope there is an upgrade path for us current and very recent buyers of a genuine Prusa I3 🙂 ie a kit upgrade.

From your teasing image .....

8mm Z axis screw rods supported at the top. Maybe anti backlash bearings, proper Z axis to stepper mounts. Y platform issues solved ? Different cooling fan arrangement, and cable management. Hmmm many of the issues solved by clone manufacturers 🙂 And pointed out as problems here on this forum, by genuine Prusa I3 owners, like me, and derided by Peter.

Re: Disappointment

I would like to think that these forums are monitored by Prusa Research especially as you are about to launch a new printer that addresses the concerns expressed by some of us newbies here with knowledge, on these very forums, that were criticised by long term members here, and they all along with inside information of a new launch. ie Peter.

Shameful.

Re: Disappointment

I am a qualified professional Electrical Engineer with applied Physics. I have since the 1970's been involved in some very high volts and amps. I was a field Engineer constructing substations up to 132KV, and then a protection Engineer. And then involved with low current projects ie SCADA That controlled many Megawatts. And a Control Engineer covering a network of over 5 million consumers.. And responsible for weather monitoring, ie early lightening detection and plotting. I worked for many companies. I am now retired and play with my six 3D printers, some home built, and with Arduinos and Dues and other projects. My hobbies keep me going 🙂 My current project is to build my grandson a scaled down working R2D2. with printed parts on my Prusa I3. (not my own design or project a Thingiverse model )

I maybe know some things. My other hobbies are Astronomy , Ornithology , wildlife and nature, walking. Science and engineering, Cosmology.

My points above. Do not take me for granted or an idiot.

I would like to be a mod here.

Update... don't worry only kidding. About being a mod. I would dreadful as a mod 🙂

Re: Disappointment

More Original Prusa i3 MK2 info:

We improved everything imaginable.

- E3D V6 full with no PTFE in heaterblock, faster printing and 300°C limit
- Z axis with integrated leadscrews as motor shaft (no couplings)
- Beefier extruder motor
- Full automatic mesh bed levelling (compensating even for the curvature of the bed)
- Bed is screwed to the Y axis at 6 points, no adjustment wheels
- Sturdier frame, end of PSU cover is attached to the Y axis
- X and Y endstops are screwed to the parts, Z probe on extruder
- Better cooling which does not cool down the heater block
- Improved extruder body which allows to remove and work on the nozzle without complete disassembling the whole thing 🙂
- Better belt attachment system
- Better LCD cover, preventing users from touching the SD card slot and discharging static into the LCD
- Better LCD cable mounting with printed clips (too tight Zipties breaking the cables caused 90% of the LCD problems we've seen)
- Possibility to adjust the X-ends distance
- Better electronics cover with hinged door and better cable support
- Cover for the heatbed cables on the bed
- Custom USB ID -> Win10 slicing support
- 3 zone heatbed, where corners heat more to have more even heating and possibility to print at the edge of the area
- NO GLASS!
- NO ABS JUICE!
- NO BINDER CLIPS!
- PEI build surface 😉
- 250x210x200mm edge to edge printing.

I hope I did not forget something 🙂

Upgrades are 250USD, which includes even the new E3D hotend ...
For users who bought in a last month before release, the upgrade will be roughly 50% cheaper 🙂
