Are all 5 stepper motors the same?

I am thinking of getting a spare stepper motor so I have one in the box.
Are they all the same stepper motor? Minus the 2 with the leadscrews (unless they are the same?)
Do I have to purchase direct from Prusa and are they a Prusa motor?

I figured if I have one at least if any of the other 3 go I can be up and running fairly quickly. 😀

Ben

The steppers are unlikely to break down in use; they are generally run well below their maximum specifications.

They are fairly regular NEMA 17 (approx. 1.7", 42mm) motors, but these do come in a wide range of specs. Basically (but not always) the longer they are the greater the current handling and power output. If you get a spare of similar size to the originals, they should work the same. If you can see the specs, look for 2 Amp (or just under) current handling.

You can even get motors with threaded rods, for example: http://www.banggood.com/42-Lead-Screw-Linear-Stepper-Motor-1_5A-40mm-300mm-Rod-For-3D-Printer-p-1048041.html

What I found was that motors of a higher current rating are quieter when run with lower current.

Hi Peter

Thanks for that. Just having a spare would be great even if it never gets used.

Is it 1.7 degree or 1.8 degree I need?

1.8 degrees (200 steps for 1 revolution).

The Prusa supplied steppers are 36mm (X, Y) and 40mm (E), so you may have to make some adjustments to get larger motors to fit.

There is another option and that is to purchase an "upgrade kit" from Prusa, and that way, you would get a spare hot end, probe, motors, printed parts, bed, hardware etc.

A pair of replacement Z motors (from Banggood) is £50 (plus import duty etc), a hot end is another £45 or so. Just a thought... It is quite a large outlay though for things you will probably never need.

Re: Are all 5 stepper motors the same?

I can say that having a spare available would be good. I never thought much about it before but last week I ran into an issue with the Y-axis motor in that it would travel 10% further than requested. Tried "High Power" and "Quiet" with the same results. Hooked it up to the X-axis motor connection on the RAMBo and it behaved the same. Reflashed firmware, new firmware, old firmware, modified my own firmware all with the same results.

Needless to say Prusa is as baffled by this as me and are sending me a replacement. Having a spare on hand would have limited my downtime so I will probably purchase an additional upgrade kit soon so I will have additional parts at the ready.

Thanks all.

I had been thinking about buying the upgrade kit. It is a fair chunk of money (worth it mind) but I was thinking more along the lines of spreading the cost over the months. One month buy a spare hot end with maybe some upgrades (harder nozzles), another month a stepper motor but I do not need too many parts.

I will however be buying a second MK2 soon so having some spares might be a good idea. 🙂

I will have a better and longer look later. They have LDO on them but that does not translate to any other part number on the net. 🙁

Re: Are all 5 stepper motors the same?

Here's the LDo range of 42mm steppers: http://ldomotors.com/products/show/42mm-hybrid-stepper-series

The E3D stepper is 38mm in length whereas the Prusa motors are 36mm? (or maybe 34mm) (X, Y) and 40mm (E) and from a different manufacturer. They will in all likelihood perform in a similar manner.

X,Y,E steppers on my MK2 = about 38-39mm.. (all same), with E3D sticker on it, so....

Re: Are all 5 stepper motors the same?

I have the E3D sticker on the extruder motor only; I had assumed that referred to the hot end. My motors are LDO are are definately sized differently.

Re: Are all 5 stepper motors the same?

Actually you are propably right, I didnt look to that E3D sticker close enough. Looks like LDO Motors is manufacturer of all my motors after all.

My X,Y,E motors are same though, length about 39mm.

Roman

Apologies; my print has just finished and I have now re-measured. All 3 motors are the same @ 39mm: LDO 016 001 029

I cannot find that reference of their site but they do offer non-standard and OEM services The only 4-wire 40mm motor they supply off-the-shelf is the LDO-42STH38-1684 which looks about the right specs to be a good match for the Prusa-supplied motors.

Re: Are all 5 stepper motors the same?

I had Prusa on all the labels of my MK2 upgrade stepper motors. Ie Prusa labelled motors and indication of axis or extruder. Screen printed on the stepper motors. ie permanent labelling.

Spot on minus I ordered 300mm on the leadscrews ggrrrr. Should have measured 🙄 I guess I will need to put the bracket down if I ever need to use them in the future or will that pull my Z calibration off?

If you need any tech specs let me know. These are exactly the ones from the MK2 minus the wrong size leadscrew 😳

Print bottom brackets which lift the motos upwards (been there already...)

Hey Ben!

Where did you pull this info from? I've been trying to find appropriate replacements for my motors (perhaps higher quality ones from Thompson) since my lead screws seemed to arrive with a slight bow to them in shipping.

The specs don't seem to line up with any of the parts I've found so far.
