Re: Simplify3D settings

I just picked up a copy of Simplify3D and I am having great results with the Prusa i3 profile. I was wondering though, does anyone have a profile that supports 50 micron printing? I tried changing the layer height to 0.05mm on the Detail S3D profile, but that didn't work to well. 🙂

Thanks!

A big difference is the price!

Seriously, there are many slicers out there and they are all quite different, but do a similar job. You just have to find the best one for you.

Personally, I use KISS, Cura and occasionally, CraftWare and find KISS to generate the best models, Cura is quick and simple to use and CraftWare is good for adding and removing supports.

They all do a pretty good job, once you get used to them and have them set up correctly for your printer(s).

As for the price, I don't have problems in paying for something if it can do what I want and I can't find that feature elsewhere, but there are reports that S3D support is not particularly quick and there are apparently issues with the 2-week (?) trial-period.

Regarding KISS, I did purchase the "PRO" version (simply to support the author and not because I needed to) after I had used it and realised how good it was.

Re: Simplify3D settings

Personally, I've only used Slic3r and S3D. I mainly bought S3D because I was having a difficult time getting nice prints with Slic3r. It didn't seem to control oozing very well and I had a lot of messy prints. Granted, a lot of this could probably be contributed to user error. Things I like about S3D are:

- It worked very well right out of the box. I modified the Prusa 3mm file for 1.75 mm and made some other small adjustments, and the same prints I had such a difficult time with using Slic3r were perfect with S3D.
- I like having the print interface and the slicer in the same program. It's more convenient for me to print from my PC than from SD card, so I take advantage of that.
- S3D is capable of doing support material

I've yet to try KISS, although I probably should have tried it first before paying out for S3D just to try it.

Re: Simplify3D settings

Any chance we can setup a Github repo so we can be sure we are getting the latest?

I made a sub-reddit that we can use to submit and keep track of updates for slicer settings.

Will there be an updated version for the mk2?
Good question... Anthing for ABS 1.75?

Re: Simplify3D settings

Hello,

I have a strange thing happening here, the cooling fan is not starting on layer 2 like it should.
If I use the tune menu item I can turn it on and off... But the Gcode generated from Simplify3D is not making it work...

Any idea, know issue ?

Re: Simplify3D settings

Hi Phillippe,
have you got the cooling tab set for two set points? and are they different layers?

Re: Simplify3D settings

Yes I do,

I can't attach a screenshot here, but it is there and the same settings work on the other printers.

I also noticed the printer starts without waiting for the temps to stabilize ? Is this the wanted behaviour ?

Re: Simplify3D settings

There is a setting on the Temperature tab which says "Wait for temperature controller to stabilize before beginning build" ... that should be checked for both the extruder and the bed if you want the printer to wait.

There is a minor annoyance in this however; S3D generates the "set temp and continue" and "set temp and wait" commands sequentially so that first the bed temp is set and then it waits then it sets the extruder temp then waits. It would be smarter to issue both "set and continue" commands then the "set and wait" commands so that both elements warm up together then each is waited on to arrive at the set temperature. The way they do it one element comes to temperature before the next even gets to start warming up. All this is made moot if you preheat both elements before starting the print. Which is usually what I do anyway.

I don't think so.
If you let the bed warm up first and only then begin warming up HE, you let the bed stabilize the temperature in all area.
It is important especially when printing from ABS and similar materials requiring higher bed temp.

Re: Simplify3D settings

Sadly the check marks are both present on the bed and the hot end. Little puzzled by it.

I would expect a M109 M190 somethere in there ?

Re: Simplify3D settings

Here's a print I just created:

M106 S0
M140 S50
M190 S50
M104 S210 T0
M109 S210 T0
G28 W ; home all without mesh bed level

G1 X29.106 Y47.994 F7200
G1 Z0.198 F600

Maybe something in the machine settings?

Personally I think it ought to be in the order of M140, M104, M190, M109 but that's picking nits I guess.

I did a reset of all parameters, and used the Wizard to select Prusia i3 then import the profile again... Now it works...

Re: Simplify3D settings

I think the point here is, many preheat, then if the bed setting is off even by a bit the HE will cool dow and wait for the bed doing so.

I've learned to let it be, with Aluminum bed it's important to let the heat spread, on a PCB heat bed like the mk42 I don't know.

No consensus. 🙂

For which printer? This thread is apparently for the MK1 printer. Look in the MK2 section and you'll see a bunch of notes on the RC4 Simplify3D FFF configuration

Re: Simplify3D settings

Hi Guys,

My S3D profiles seem to do bed matrix first, them print a prime strip up the left hand side of the build platform,
then the extruder seems to wait for about 4 seconds, before starting the print.

if there a reason for this pause?
