How do I ? Inserting things while printing

Hi !

I create an new rudder-stand for my fleet of 3D-Benchy's like this one : http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1925678

I will modify it that some stands are stackable. For this modification I need an heavy and stable base. My idea is that I place an big metallic washer inside the new designed base while printing the object. But how do I ?

Printing must be stopped at a defined layer high, extruder is moving away from object. Then I can place the washer inside and now the printing can be coninued. I remember that the bottle-opener from Josef is doing this with a coin in this way.

Any proposals ?

Thomas

🙄 as far as i can remember, the coin in the bottle opener is inserted after the print.
➡ but anyway, the bottle opener requires filament change (for the 2nd color) with the M600 command.
when this command is processed from the gcode file, the printer unloads filament and moves the hotend out of the printing area, so that one can change the filament easy.

💡 so you can "abuse" this functionality to add inlays into your print. but you need to "reload" the filament then.
furthermore you need to be very careful when inserting metal parts into the print (like the mentioned washer), so that the nozzle doesn't "hit" the washer under any circumstances.

dem inscheniör is' nix zu schwör...

Making the base stackable will in all likelihood make it heavy enough without any extra weight.

If you stack your treasure trove of Benchy's starting with the bottom layer, then it's going to be stable anyway.

You will have more problems with the top layer: The weight of the Benchy's will bend those flimsy spokes unless you re-design it thoroughly.

I suggest you throw away some old Benchy's, that would solve the problem most elegantly! 😉

look here :

The middle part will be stackable 😉

Yes OK; I vill add some extra "space" for the washer. The nozze will not hit it (I hope so).
