GCode Software vs Printing Software

Hello all,

Pretty techie but new to 3D printing. I have been using prusa version of slic3r to create gcode files with the provided profiles. I am about to switch over to octoprint to print wirelessly.

If I am uploading gcode files created from slic3r, will the print quality remain the same, or will octoprint generate different code that will override?
IE, will I get different quality from uploading gcode to SD card and printing vs. uploading same file to octoprint and starting the print?

Thank!

Re: GCode Software vs Printing Software

Octoprint simply sends the GCode line by line from the file to the printer.

There are no additional GCode commands sent or changes made to the GCode during a print.

How is the printer going to receive the 'wireless' messages?

The printer does not receive wireless messages. The original poster will be using OctoPrint: https://octopi.octoprint.org/
This software runs on a raspberry pi (you can simply download the image and burn an SD card with the operating system installed and octoprint ready do run) and if you configure the raspberry pi to automatically connect to a wireless network (very easy to do) you can control your printer wirelessly with any computer, tablet or smartphone.

Slic3r and other slicers can send the gcode to octoprint and after that you can start the print through the octoprint interface. This is very handy because you can slice a lot of models and upload them to the raspberry pi. Then you'll just need open the interface and print a lot of models one after the other, without having to slice them.

Octoprint can also use the cura engine to slice the models. Instead of sending gcode, you can send/upload stl files and slice them using a cura profile on the raspberry pi. I personally have not done this because I prefer to slice them on my computer and suspect bigger files will take a while to process.

Thanks for the explanation, Vitor.

I think I'll stick with using 2 SD cards. One in the laptop, one in the printer, switch them when removing the finished print.

You really should have a look at Octoprint. With it you can do so much more (you can even print from the SD card). Don't remember the last time I had to mess about with the LCD & knob.

So for those that are familiar with this, the printer will still run calibrations and built in gcode commands even though the print is being initiated from octoprint?

I know octoprint allows you to input gcode commands too for different stages of print.

I am keeping my raspberry pi on ethernet to reduce communication malfunctions personally. It even has a camera option. Just added a cheap raspberry pi camera and you can view the video stream remotely, and program to take timelapse videos automatically.

Yes. There is no difference compare to using from the printer LCD/Knob and from using Pronterface with USB cable.

Re: GCode Software vs Printing Software

As I said in my first thread, there will be no differences. However, Octoprint may have communication timeout issues, so you will have to add a few GCode commands to the "Long Running Commands" list:

M600, G4, G28, G29, G30, G32, M400, M226, G80

And you may want to increase comms timeout values a little.

at this thread bavilo reports different print quality of the same *.gcode when printing via octoprint or directly from sd card.
❗ a behaviour that i haven't expected.
have you made similar experiences. ❓

➡ does the above listed measures (long running command list, increase timeout values) deal with the mentioned quality issues, or does it only avoid error messages or print interruption / abortion ?
