First layer prints very high

Hello all,

I am having an issue getting my first layer to print correctly with slic3r using the default PLA settings. It seems to print high and I can't figure out how to lower it. I am printing at 0.15 layer height and it seems like it is trying to print the first layer at that height and not pressing the filament into the bed any. I have changed the first layer height and width, and the z offset doesn't seem to do anything. I have used the live z adjust also to no effect. I have the same problem with every model I have tried using slic3r so far. The calibration model on the included SD card prints fine, and the same model prints a good first layer using Cura. No first layer problems at all except when I use slic3r. I included a picture. This is what it looks like if it sticks at all and doesn't just become a stringy knot.

Re: First layer prints very high

first: the first layer height is limited by the firmware. you can't go below 0.15mm ! it's alway recommended to print the first layer with 0.2mm. all the slicer default settings for our prusa i3 mk2/mk2s are optimized to do so.

second: from your picture I can see that your Z live adjustment level needs to be lowered significant. you still "lay" your first layer onto the pei sheet instead of squishing it onto it.
have a look at this thread and read at least the first 5 sites, until you got the point how to find the optimum.

It only does this using slic3r. I can try it, but if I lower the live Z enough to compensate for this, I won't be able to print anything on the included SD card without the nozzle hitting the bed. It prints those just fine at the levels I have it set to currently. It also prints the first layer fine using Cura, but I wanted to try to use the recommended software. Is live Z tuning something that can change depending on the software used?

Re: First layer prints very high

yes, this first layer looks indeed pristine.

so the problem is only related to slic3r.
which version do you use ? the one that came with the driver package for the printer ?
and which settings ? default ones, or the prusa ones ?

at slic3r you have various settings that can cause this.
it may even be an issue inside the start script for the gcode.

can you post a small .gcode (as attachement -> using *.zip), so that our slic3r experts here can have a look inside it.

Re: First layer prints very high

In Slic3r, under Printer Settings -> General -> Size and coordinates is a value to adjust your Z offset. That should be zero. If non zero, it will be added to the printer's already set Z height, which your image shows is set correctly.

The default should have been zero, but check just to be sure.
