Cannot modify programming

I am trying to calibrate the steps/mm on my printer. I printed out a ruler and found sizes to be off by about 15% across all 3 axes. When I try to upload modified Marlin file, I get:

Binary sketch size: 96,098 bytes (of a 258,048 byte maximum)
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage(): timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_getsync(): timeout communicating with programmer

I have tried:
different USB cord.
unplugging LCD.
newest version of arduino and 1.06

Any ideas?

From searching online, I have seen mention of adding a bootloader to the ATMEGA 2560, but it seems like everyone else is able to modify the Prusa firmware, so it seems like that is the wrong fix.

Re: Cannot modify programming

Hi Andrew, I have never modified the firmware from standard, and my printer seems to manage OK...

CERTAINLY NOT 15% OUT OF TOLERANCE...

Before you change the firmware, could you create another test piece and try measuring that? say a 20mm cube?

it's possible that the original file is wrongly sized!

Re: Cannot modify programming

The bootloader is already installed on the RAMBo; you don't need to install it again.

You don't need to recompile firmware to change the steps. See http://reprap.org/wiki/G-code#M92:_Set_axis_steps_per_unit M92 can be added to start GCode.

And finally, as Joan said, it is exceedingly unlikely that your printer is out be more than 1% (actually less than that), so you either have a model or build issue.

Re: Cannot modify programming

You may need to use the avrdude build provided by Prusa3D.

If steps/mm is the only thing you want to change in the firmware, it might be better (easier) to use M92 gcode command.

Our new firmware guru Pavel is now finalizing a firmware feature to calibrate the extruder steps.

Thank you for all the responses. All my prints were failing. Maybe something clogged. I bought a new bowden tube. I will try to get it together and try these options this week.
