X Axis belt with annoying noise

Hello,

Yesterday i have finished my kit assembly with success. Printer is very good and i instant notice the better quality than the mk2s that i had. While printer sound is much less than MK2S i only have one problem, the X belt is doing a very annoying noise, and the X belt turn in a angle while move back and forward.

Video:
Fast Movement: https://vocaroo.com/i/s0osJrmsvLoX
Slow Movement: https://vocaroo.com/i/s1yWlaXqaa8L

First layers are perfect, print quality is also perfect.
Ajusting the X Motor shaft didn't help, and when assembly i renember the left side turns free with a gap.
What can cause that noise?

Regards

Re: X Axis belt with annoying noise

Sounds like the idler pulley is rubbing against the housing part. Try loosening the nut and bolt holding the idler. This nut/bolt does not need to be very tight. It only acts as a bar for the pulley bearing to rotate on. Hence the locknut...

Also, I noticed the belt twisting a little. Check to make sure the belt has left and right clearance from the sides of the printed part. The twisting also suggests to me that the idler nut and bolt might be too tight.

But, even though I did not over tighten, mine squeeked for a short time during the first print after installed it. The sound went away and has not returned for me.

Hello, i able to fix the noise... It seens the idler or belt was pressing against the orange part holder, with a finger i have aplied force forward the belt and then move the x axis, also i have tried to shift the idler inside the part with a tool, it fix the sound problem, and now is dead silent, still belt create that angle when moving.
Also i removed the Z motor to ajust the screw, now the screw end is horizontal with the nut end (No screw comming out of the nut), the idler is free and able to move a bit to the sides when forced with a tool. Still the twist presists... I will take more photos and upload in a min

My personal advice: wait and make pressure on Prusa Research.

Background: Many people have the wiggly and squiggly x belt problem. And Josef Prusa has in his latest blogpost on prusaprinters.org stated that 4 new printed parts which build the X axis have been developed and are currently under test.

So the question is: when are those parts released?

I also spend ours with adjusting the belt and motor idler. It got better but was not resolved. All I fear now is that the screws on the motor and idler will die soon. So there I am waiting for a final fix which is using the new parts

I think your problem is because the drive belt is not centered in the extruder belt holder.
For some reason, the belt holder has been made deeper than necessary.

It is therefore tempting to push the belt down to the bottom of the belt holder. Therefore, the belt will rub on the sides of the pulleys.
Then try to move the belt so much that a piece of filament gets fit between the bottom of the belt holder and the belt itself so it will be properly centered.

Is the belt-rubbing still not fixed at MK3 ? 😮

Nope it is not fixed yet!

Waiting... hoping... crying... more waiting...

Among upcoming updates are reworked X-carriage with belt holder system similar to the one on Y-axis and X-end-motor with the integrated belt tensioner. Once these parts get through our testing, they will be put into production and available on our website. " https://www.prusaprinters.org/original-prusa-i3-mk3-2-months/

So yeah. Lets hope they do their tests and development with a high priority. And let's hope do not we have to wait for the MK3S to be released. Please release ASAP!

Good cath, i renember to push the belt all way down when assembling. I try your suggestion still not fixed, i have push the belt to the center of the assembly.
I see many people companing about XYZ alignment, there are some fix for Y already

eg. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2777432

In fact my Y does the most noise now and seens a bit lagged when slow move by hand

Re: X Axis belt with annoying noise

I put my kit together a couple of weeks ago and have the similar noise that seems to be coming from the x-axis smooth pulley area.
I ordered a 16T toothed pulley (from Amazon) and installed them on both the x and y axis and the noise is gone.
I am not sure if it is the teeth making the difference, or the shorter sides, or the fact that i took the axis apart and put it back together.
I do see that the belt is still riding towards the 'front' side of the pulley, but no noise.

I did have to shorten both belts by a tooth.
I also found i could have removed the z-axis trapezoid motor nut and the four stepper mounting screws and pushed the lead screw over enough to get to the pulley screw without taking off both sides.

I printed a 150x150x1 test part at both 35mm and 50mm exterior perimeter speeds and have no pulley noise.

I do still have what I believe is a bearing noise. That is the next task.

The diameter (belt contact area) of the smooth pulley is 12mm and the toothed pulley is 9.5mm. Not sure if the 20T would have worked better or not.

Re: X Axis belt with annoying noise

My printer operated flawlessly for about 4 weeks. During the last 2 weeks of this period, the printer saw significant duty. Toward the end of the 4 weeks, I started hearing crunching noises coming from the X-idler assembly. It sounded like the belt was slipping on the edge or the pulley was grinding against the part. It got so bad I finally investigated. As a troubleshooting measure, I moved the pulley to the Y-axis. The noise followed.

Inspection of the bearing revealed the inner sleeve (3mm bore) was very loose. Spinning the pulley indicated the bearings were badly worn. Flushing the housing with WD-40 flushed out a lot of red/rusty residue.

Bearing Popping while installed in the Y-Axis:

Bearing Isolated: I placed the bearing on a tapered file and placed the butt end of the file against the table top so the sound would be magnified.

The original Belt Value for the X-Axis was about 270 which is within tolerance. Also, the pulley was installed such that it could turn freely so I know installation was good.
