Replaced the heated bed bearings with Igus Drylin bearings

I replaced the three LM8UU ball bearings on the heated bed with Igus Drylin RJ4JP-01-08 bearings. The noise reduction was quite substantial. Turn up the volume and listen to this video 😉

Notice that the "grinding" noise is gone, and the high-pitched noise from the microstepping from running the motor at that high speed remains. When moving the bed at "normal speeds", it is virtually silent.

It was an easy (and cheap) mod. The only thing to watch out for is to not over-tighten the "U-bolts". The Igus bearings are very easy to deform.

Now, I wonder how long the bearings will last 😉

Do you notice any reduction in ringing? One user posted such results and prompted me to order some new bearings just to test. I ordered the igus bearings you mentioned and Misumi LMU8 bearings. The Misumi came in first so I installed them. No real reduction in volume (as expected) but also no reduction in ringing when comparing prints from the included SD card. They do feel a little smoother than stock. I haven't gotten the igus bearings in yet, but I don't think I'll go through the hassle of changing again unless I hear from others that in addition to the reduced volume, they also see reduced ringing.

They will last long enough i believe =)

Did you also do the X-axis? If not, try it out... I did!

Just be careful not to overtighten the zip-ties and the backplate as they will create more pressure than the IGUS can handle

I haven't really paid any attention to ringing just yet. Can you point me to a good STL for testing it?

I was considering any pre-sliced prints from the included SD that I had already printed to be good tests, since I could hold each in hand and inspect them. I think perhaps the gear bearing is a good choice because it seems to exhibit a fair amount of ringing.

Initially, I considered doing only the Y axis, because I felt that it was quite noisy. I don't see the same need for the X axis, but now that we are talking about ringing, I threw three LM8UU bearings onto a scale (39 grams), and then three Igus bearings (11 grams).

Maybe that small weight reduction is enough to lower the inertia of the extruder and, in turn, reduce ringing (?)...

Very nice. What model/version of the IGUS drylin did you install? Was it a snug fit or did you find any play in them?

No, I didn't get the rods. Maybe I should have, but I didn't really want to spend that much at the time. Are you trying just the bearings or rods as well?

Mine also have a bit of play... but its not that much and i havent seen any negative effect yet.

Let us know your findings when you fit the Misumi's 😀

Yeah I’m going to try both rods and bearings. G6 tolerance so hopefully they will be ok ... never tried Misumi before

My Misumi bearings are on their way, two days out for delivery a few states away.

I went with the LMU8 (Sealed) Misumi as Y-axis heat bed replacements when my MK3 cones in. The specs show they have a tighter
I.D. tolerance for less movement. We will see.

I have now printed the gear bearing, but I am not sure what to look for. I would expect ringing to mostly occur at corners, but the model is completely round ❓ 🙂

I printed the test object, and I see some weird things. All sides of the object - except for one - looks "perfect" to me. The not-so-good side is when both X and Y moves simultaneously, which results in small "ripples" along the entire side (about 25-30 mm long). I don't see these ripples on the sides where only one of the axes move. I tried to take a photo of it. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Also, on the side where only X moves... is that Z banding? 😯

EDIT: Printed the test again with speed = 110 %. The ripples almost disappeared, so it is a resonance phenomenon. On the other hand, it became clear that the Y axis do cause some ringing when starting/stopping. The photo below is taken from the top of the new print, showing the same corner as in the first photo. I see ringing 🙂

It isn't horrible, and maybe it's to be expected using the faster print speeds that the included files use. These pictures are of a print using the Misumi bearings and stock everything else. My wife said she took my initial print with stock bearings to her work so I don't have it for reference.

Aah, of cause I'm not supposed to look at the object from the side but from the top... then it is not really "completely round" 🙄

My print does not come close to yours, I must say. Also, I'm probably under-extruding.

There have been quite a few posts on here and on Facebook about the rods getting grooves really easily for both the MK2 and MK3. It does seem that Prusa may of had a bad batch which has affected a small number of orders for both printers. Although I do expect to get ringing when printing at higher speeds you shouldnt have any when printing really slow at 30mms which I was.

Prusa support sent me an email saying that swapping the bearings woudnt help anything if the rods themselves werent hardened properly. The IGUS likely solved the issue due to them being the Drylin gliding style and not the rolling kind.

If you notice binding, grating noise / feeling or resistance on your bearings when being pushed on the rods you should send a video to [email protected] with your order number explaining the problem and let support know in the chat.

I found the igus with the metal casing for Y don't line up and cause binding on the dual bearing side due to the Y slots not being perfectly milled (other users have had this issue too. which also means the standard bearings probably aren't lined up either). Plus like 0.3mm of clearance on them makes for plenty of play, bed can be twisted more than i would like. i took mine off.
