New cooling solution I hope you like

Alright, I'm happy with this. Been wanting to get a better nozzle view and make nozzle changes dead simple. Oh and it cools your parts too.

I'm still tweaking to improve airflow and I have some other ideas. I will make it more professional later. Please give me feedback if you are interested.

I will upload a new extruder cover soon, but easy to just to survey on existing one to remove excess.

Out of curiosity is the goal to cool the workpiece, the extruder or both?

Just the part. That's another reason to use the sock. Keeps the extruder hot and stable while you cool the part.

Well, the nozzle access is fantastic. Being able to watch the nozzle lay down filament is the best way to debug issues and understand how to optimize better. It's also mesmerizing at times. I won't go back to stock. I will continue refining this approach.

The cooling is hit and miss. I would say this solution, so far, is just different, not better. I don't think our little 5V fan puts out enough volume for this size cooling. Maybe. I may try fewer nozzles spaced around and some down firing.

For example, Benchy is tricky because the bow is overhang, but the print has detail at the stern with the rudder hole, so the head spends a lot of time there, moving the cooler away from the bow. With the faster print speed, the nozzle lays down the bow super quick and then right back to the stern. That hot filament barely gets exposed to the cooler. And the print temps are higher to achieve better flow at these speeds, but makes this problem worse. The slicer would be smart to slow down the overhang to enable more cooling. The size of benchy is such that the bow is out of range for this circular style cooler. I think a dual fan cooler might work well. May look into that.

I really like what you came up with, however, I'm very new to 3D printing so will run the unit as designed until I'm comfortable with the process as I don't want to introduce outside issues. That being said, I've been re-doing all of the parts in Pro/E while I wait for my unit to ship... It appears that cooling may be an issue with this so I when reworked the cooling shroud I only loosely based it on the original design, see below... Though I can't help but see a bite tray when I look at this...

Now just spitballing here, remember I never owned a 3D printer so I'm quite green, would something like this be effective?

This one would be bad because no print will withstand heat that close to the heater block. That's one reason my cobra is so far out, since I am using PLA for the moment.

There are several constraints you should try to hit at same time: lots of air flow from tiny 5V fan, not too close to heater block so won't melt, not hit PIDNA, need to clear heater wires, not too low to hit print (stay at PINDA level), hit from all angles, possibly down-firing as well. Plus my main constraint of don't block nozzle view and provide easy access for changes. Solution space keeps shrinking. 😉 Good luck.

Agreed, back of the napkin says I need to more than double the vent area, for now I'm just working up all of the parts to pass time... Do you have a part number for the fan? I'd like to look at the data sheet...

I'm so used to working with steel that I never even considered heat as being an issue but that makes total sense, duh. As much as I'd like to see the print in process I don't think I'll be switching from the standard design any time soon so when the time comes for me to modify my setup it will have to be based on the original design, maybe that will change at some point though.

Just an observation,

in the picture above I seem to have got some surface blemishes on the front of the model, the Cobra doesn't cool the front!

wonder it it's down to the fan, or the front of the model lifting off the PEI and causing positional, over extrusion, or both?

Agree. I am working on moving tail out to redirect air so you get more coverage in front. I have some other ideas to help overall as well.

I expect to be unable to work on this for the next few days so bear with me.

Sorry for the long delay. I had to do more testing and ran into problem (literally). I was able to increase cross-section so our wimpy 5V fan can push air through. During testing I found that it ran into the heated cable cover so I made a lower profile one.

Please give it a try. Vents blow air from all sides now, but still with a good view and easy nozzle change. The fan CFM is low so 4 side cooling is showing limits but good results overall. I am happy with this for now.

The path that the flow of air needs to take seems to long... How is the cooling on the right side?

Do you have any photos of test prints or something?

What do you mean by: "Need to replace cable cover. Give it a try."

During testing I found that it ran into the heated cable cover so I made a lower profile one.

I included that in the files. I clarified in the text.
