I am having problems with my mk3 filament sensor, the mk3 mmu will have 5 filament sensors...

I have asked Prusa to hold my mk3 mmu upgrade until the filament sensors are sorted!

I'm curious about your option to hold your order as I have one on order, the 1st ❓ does Prusa reach out to clients that have purchased version 1 of hardware if there is a known issue with it, to have it replaced?
and or 2nd ❓ if the hardware issues are more software fix then a swap of parts then it's really up to the user to keep searching the forums for a solution, I take it?... 🙂 🙂 🙂

Re: Mk3 MMU Y/N ?

The good news is you don't need to decide, because the MK3 MMU ins't shipping yet and won't be for at least another 1-2 months.

Reading the forum for the Mk2 MMU makes it clear that the MMU is still something of a science project. Some people have been able to get it to work well, and others have not and are becoming very frustrated and agitated. It's hard to know the ratio of the two groups because most of the people who are satisfied with their MMU are not posting to the forum. It appears that the MK2 MMU has a couple of design flaws (which I hope will be corrected by the time the MK3 MMU ships), but also that this is a really new approach and people are still figuring out how to make it work reliably.

So buy an MMU if multimaterial or multicolor printing is important to you and you don't mind investing some effort into making it work. If that doesn't appeal to you then don't.

I have an MMU on order and I don't plan to cancel it because multicolor printing is very important to me. I also have a Palette+ I bought as an alternative (the Palette+ can be used with multiple printers, so if I get the MMU to work reliably, I will use the Palette+ with my other printers).

My sense is that if I can get the MMU to work, it's likely to be more flexible and efficient than the Palette. But it's good to not put all your eggs in one basket.

Besides the fact that the MMU is still unreliable and has design flaws, I feel it is important to mention that it's more a multi-color solution, not multi-material. From my research, I have not been able to find a clear answer whether it is truly multi-material and if it can handle materials with different printing requirements (different extruder temperatures). Some people do mention printing with different materials but they don't mention what types and at what temperatures.

Peter, I would be interested in your opinion of the Palette+ after you've used it for awhile. I understand the concept, but what I don't understand is the accuracy of when the colors are mixed to come out at the proper time.
Let's say after the colors are fused in the Palette+ and moved forward to the printer a delay or skip on the pattern or on an infill portion changes the timing? This would cause the colors to be printed where they shouldn't.
The accuracy of the timing is what throws me off when there's a glitch.

Re: Mk3 MMU Y/N ?

That’s one of the reasons the Palette has to recompile your sliced files. It inserts pauses into the gcode at periodic intervals. Along with the filament movement sensor, the Palette then can sense if the paused print (detected by the lack of filament travel) occurred at the expected timeframe. This is all part of the rather ingenious ‘ping’ system- it constantly keeps the Palette in sync with the actual progress of the print.

I suspect that disabling 5 filament sensors is just as easy as disabling one. Does the MMU depend on the filament sensors for its functionality? That would be a non-starter for me, as I get false triggers on the filament sensor regularly and see little value in it.

I've been getting it working with one of my other printers, and my reaction so far is that it works better than it has a right to, but isn't perfect.

It does have an active feedback loop where the printer will pause from time to time and the Palette will detect the pause as a way of knowing exactly how far into the print it is and thus stay in sync. But the system isn't perfect, and there's a fairly long piece of filament between the Palette and the printer meaning that corrections take some time to take hold. So the calibration has to be pretty good to begin with. I think once you have it dialed in it should work reliably, but I'm not at that point yet.

The support is excellent, however. I've been working with their team to add support for one of my older printers which uses some very quirky gcode, and they are incredibly responsive and will be rolling out changes to support my printer with the next release. That alone gives me high confidence that I'll get the kinks worked out before too long.

Re: Mk3 MMU Y/N ?

As far as i recall. The main difference between mk2 and mk3 mmu setup is the filament sensors...
In the absence of information to improve the mk2 mmu setup or improve the mk3 filament sensor. Rhere seems little point upgrading...

A mk3 mmu with the sensors turned off. Sounds pretty much like a mk2 mmu...

Re: Mk3 MMU Y/N ?

I am a 63 year old tech lover and very interested in 3D printing in my retirement years.

I do not want to be stuck in the B&W world. Give me color.

I have read that the MK3 is MMU capable and with 5 filaments instead of 4? Is that correct? If so I am certainly interested in it.

I am also interested in laser engraving. Can the MK3 be laser equipped?

I am near my point of order for either the MK3 with MMU or CR-10 S5 with laser.

Is there a video of the MK3 with MMU somewhere ?

Happy 3D printing all.

David, I haven't heard of a video on MK3 MMU yet and if others will correct me the MMU for the MK3 only had 4 not 5 inputs. You might be counting the one output with the 4 inputs.
I ordered it as a secondary order by their recommendation and since cancelled it because of all of the errors going on now with MK2 MMU. There are several posts about them getting it to work with modifications, but then running into other issues.

I'm hoping to see things clear up either during the next five weeks until my printer ships or while I get used to it. I wouldn't mind having the option.

Re: Mk3 MMU Y/N ?

To the best of my understanding the Mk3 mmu has 4 extruders, and 5 filament sensors, which I guess are one for each individual filament and one for the multiplexor.

I am not aware of a Mk3 MMU video, yet...

also I think forum member JLTX has been working on a laser engraving update, in this thread https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3-f30/laser-engraver-mod-for-mk3-t13967.html#p64391
