MK2S to MK3 Upgrade kit leftovers

Hi guys!

First time here...

Customer support on the chat wasn't helpful at all and wanted to know if someone over here could help me!

I have a MK2S bought just less than a month before the MK3 released and I wanted to buy the full upgrade kit (MK3)..

Which components are needed to build a another MK2 from the leftovers as Josef said in a video, that basically you would need to upgrade almost all the parts...

Hope someone knows the answer 🙂

Is it not obvious to you that doing this is exactly the same as just buying an MK3 and assembling it alongside your MK2S

It's not obvious to me. I'm in the same boat as the OP and wondering the same thing.

You'd at least need motors, linear bearings, smooth rod, just from looking at the parts list on the order page.

It's not obvious to me. I'm in the same boat as the OP and wondering the same thing.

So let's call the set of parts that are the same in both printers "Common Parts"

The MK2S is built from "Common Parts" and "MK2S Unique Parts"
The MK3 is built from "Common Parts" and "MK3 Unique Parts"

The MK2S to MK3 upgrade kit includes only "MK3 Unique Parts" so you'd need another set of "Common Parts" after you do the upgrade to assemble with your "MK2S Unique Parts" left over after the upgrade. Conveniently for you, Prusa sells a kit of both the "Common Parts" and "MK3S Unique Parts" together. They call this the MK3 kit.

Think of this another way: What you want in the end are two printers, a MK2S and an MK3. You already have the MK2S, so why tear it all down if you have to buy all the parts to build an MK3 anyway? This was sort of the whole point as to why the "full upgrade" kit wasn't originally going to be offered. It's a terrible purchase because it leaves you with an expensive pile of parts that is not really useful until you build it back to the state it was in before you took it apart.

Now, reading between the lines if you are really asking if its cheaper to build an MK3 starting with the upgrade kit and adding the other bits? Well, if you can print your own plastic components and use some chinesium parts here and there you could certainly build some kind of franken-clone that saves a bit of money. Having built the Mk3 from the full kit I don't think you'd really get a net benefit after accounting for the effort and the lack of a fully tested set of components.

I don't really think it is a bad deal for some people. I know a few people that just don't want a second printer but get the benefit of a MK3 for less than buying the full kit. II bought the MK3 upgrade kit as well, but it was because I also had the $100 voucher to go with it. I'm so far figuring you will probably need motors, rods, bearings, U-Bolts, belts, and LCD. You will probably have to source a lot of the parts yourself, but if you honestly shop around the majority of the parts can be found fairly cheap. I'd be curious to have an official response on what all will need to be pulled off the Mk2s to build the MK3 though.

I already have the majority of the spares parts, so I probably won't have to even tear my MK2s apart and I'm getting a MK3 for $399 vs $749 for the MK3 kit.

this thread is very similar to https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk2-f23/mk2-to-mk3-upgrade-parts-t12409.html

on post 2 I have given my estimation of parts requirements

Franken Prusa lives...

mk2 frames, chassis, rods, bearings, motors, heavy duty Y motor bracket. volcano enabling z motor mounts and top brackets
mk2.5 X carriage,
mk2.5/ mk3 extruder, 5 volt fans
chinese 400 watt, 24 volt psu, clone E3dV6

adjustable X motor interface mount / belt adjuster
mk52/24 volt heatbed on spacers because Y frame from mk2 is too narrow
PC steel build plate on loan from my mk2 MMUv1
self test failes X axis length, will look at that later today if I have time
only problem so far, Y axis motion reversed

but ....

it prints...
3.2.1 firmware... probably over extruding a little... but something to play with when I get time
