Mid print issue

Hi, I have been printing a lot since I got the I3 MK3S in November 19 (pre-assembled) but no the printer has started to have issues.

I have the same issues regardless if I use the 0.4 or 0.25 nozzle, I  mostly use Prusafilement or filament from the Prusa shop, I have change the PFTE tube and cleaned everything between each failed print but the issue remains.

I don't get a blob or anything around the nozzle, it just stops extruding filament at a point (sometimes half an hour, sometimes many hours into the print) but it don't show any error and continues to print but without any filament.

If I unload the filement afterwords it is a bit stuck but can be pulled out with a little force, I have also dismantled to inspect the PFTE tube and nozzle and there is often a small melted blob at the end of the filament between the PFTE tube and the nozzle, created by the heat and the filament not extruding in my guess.

If I unload the filament I can load a new filament without issues and it is extruded again and I can start a new print but the results are always the same with the issue mid print.

I am getting a bit frustrated dismantling and cleaning everything each time to have everything tip top before each new trial but with each fail my morale diminish.

I use std. settings for everything in prusaslicer and have bought .stl files from printable scenery so the prints have been well tested.

I print from 0.1 to 0.3 where the 0.3 prototype seems to be working a bit better then the finer details.

See attached images.

Any ideas what is causing the issue mid print and how to solve it?

best regards,

Michael

RE: Mid print issue

I am having the very same issue. I have even replaced the heat-sink, PTFE tube and the nozzle but to no avail. I have played with different temperatures, materials and Idler tensions but the problem persists. If I hear the extruder clicking I can pause the print and change material, this allows the print to continue for awhile but then the issue continues. Did you fix the issue Michael?

@thirtythree3d

Hi, The support asked me to reposition the heatsink and nozzle about 1mm to get the nozzle closer to the heatblock.
I also had to apply more cooling paste to the heatsink and now it works better printing at 0.20mm but I still have issues with 0.1 and 0.15mm

RE: Mid print issue

This could be related to cooling. Have you started using a silicone sock?

I've had extrusion problems in the past; firstly from having swapped to a plated copper block, then secondly when I started using a silicone sock. Both times, the problem went away when I did a "PID tune", which (I believe) attempts to calibrate the printer's heating feedback loop to match the rate at which the nozzle cools. (i.e. it can help prevent overcooking of the filament in the nozzle, and in my case, after the addition of the sock, it seemed to reduce the likelyhood of onset of heat creep with the (PLA) filament softening at the bondtech gears.)

Ironically I was told to move the nozzle further away. I will try a sock and a PID tune next.

I tried another PID tune as temperature seems to be the going theme all all threads I've been reading. Currently it's printing without an issue. Have you tried a PID tune? I may even replace the Thermistor and see if that helps.

Print failed. Going to replace the Sensor and see if there is any improvement.

RE: Mid print issue

Changed the Sensor and no change but after deconstructing the head once again i realised the Extruder motor wasn't turning but just vibrating. I thought that this must have been the culprit. New Motor, new sensor, new heater cartridge, new nozzle, new heatsink, new PTFE but still the same problem. Prusa haven't been able to diagnose it either through countless Chats and pictures sent.
