Maximum dimensions?

Hey since I'm waiting for my Mk3 I'm planning my enclosure.

Can someone who already has a Mk3 tell me the maximum dimensions in each direction?

I want to build the enclosure as small as possible and as big as necessary.
The spool inclusive holder can be unconsidered because I want to place it somewhere else.

But maybe I will upgrade to MMU 2.0 so if someone could guess the height included the MMU 2.0 (or maybe you can measure it with MMU 1.0) I would be happy.

I don't think anyone knows how big the MMU2 will be, not even Prusa, since as far as I know they're still tweaking the design.

OK, but the normal dimensions without spool and holder are enough. (I need the whole maximum dimensions in each direction inclusive cables!)

The dimensions inclusive MMU (1.0 because I don't think the 2.0 will be much bigger) were only nice to know.

The 'official dimensions? ---

...and these are the dimensions of my MK3 which seem to confirm the doc above:

1) 'My' assembled physical printer is 44cm wide - 51cm deep - 38cm high
Notes: Heat bed all the way back, no cables
2) Cables:
- Heatbed cable bundle extends 4cm from the back when Y=home
- X-motor cable extends 7cm to the left side when X and Z=home
- Power cord plug extends 7cm for straight plug, 3cm for 90 degree plug to the right
- Extruder cable bundle sits inside all dimensions

I separated out the cables for two reasons:

1) you may want to center the printer in the cabinet for esthetic reasons
2) You may want to use a different power plug and/or route the X motor cable more towards the back with a cable guide

I looked at the 'picture' of the MMU2 'prototype' and using the motors as reference I used Photoshop and ScreenCalipers to guess-timate that it sits about 15cm above the frame. This is considerably higher than the MMU1 and you need to consider the filament tube(s) of each as you approach maximum Z. Also, the mount on the MMU2 prototype appears as if it would interfere with maximum Z so I am sure there will be significant changes in the mount if not the mechanism. It could be higher or lower or have a completely different filament routing that we can not anticipate.

So, in other words, if you are building your 'ultimate' cabinet for MK3/MMU2 then I would caution you to wait at least until the MMU2 is finalized and its docs appear on the Prusa site.

Re: Maximum dimensions?

I'm in your situation Stephan, but I agree with JASII. I've put an order in for 80/20 parts locally and then put it on hold when I found out the MMU is changing, long live MMU 2.0. Going into their blog section and enlarging the picture they have on the device it seems to be 152.4 MM or 6 inches tall.
What it doesn't show is how the five filament roles connect to the unit so there's no idea on how much space you have to account for to add it to an enclosure.
My first thought is to see how it can be mounted above and not connected to the aluminum frame of the printer. I'm trying to think ahead of the game and wonder if the spool holder, older MMU and now the MMU 2.0 causes any vibrations that affects the print? Hence my thought of detaching the MMU.
About my measurement estimations above. I assumed the 6 inches of additional height by measuring the top cross bar of the frame and seeing how many times I can put that measurement across the height of the MMU device. I came up with four times the width of the frame top cross piece.

Too many variables to start building an enclosure even if you add a few cm's....

Re: Maximum dimensions?

support told me 50x50x70 cm including the spool holder with a regular sized spool. Mine should be shipping in the next few so i'll know for sure soon!

Re: Maximum dimensions?

I am building an enclosure for my (eventually getting here some time in the "soon" future...), Figure I will relocate the LCD from the front of the printer to the side of the enclosure to save on space.

Planning to do a variation on the stuva enclosure
1x Stuva 60x50x64 cm on the bottom https://www.ikea.com/de/de/catalog/products/30128177/?query=301.281.77
1x Stuva 60x50x128 cm on top https://www.ikea.com/de/de/catalog/products/00128621/

doors and what not too, with a shelf to separate the top of the larger enclosure for filaments. Idea being that I will need the extra height when the MMU 2.0 arrives. Bit of a gamble but I guess I will have to just make it work or re-purpose the enclosure for something more domestic

Re: Maximum dimensions?

And you can displace easily the power alim (PSU) at the left side of the enclosure ; So the switch is quickly reachable. And cables (2) has a relatively length to link the electronic box (Rambo).

Re: Maximum dimensions?

Have you seen this? It will take a few cm off the space required for wires at the back of the printer. I haven't tried it. Don't have my printer yet.

Proud owner of a Mk3 that is producing very nice prints. There is room for improvement as I learn more about it, but so far I am very happy.

Re: Maximum dimensions?

So I started on my enclosure this morning quickly before work, for a 40 minute build I'm fairly happy with it.

Still need to mount the pressure switch openers and magnetic locks (hotend + kids = bad)

Height of the printer compartment is 92CM m though I could extend that another 5CM m if needed. Depth will be more of a concern at 47CM, I had planned to relocate the lcd to the side of the enclosure wall but thinking about it now I might mount it to the frame bottom left.

I may build me one just like this. I really like the clean look! Did you make the doors or were you able to buy those too?

Re: Maximum dimensions?

Just a warning to everyone in this thread. When I started printing in an enclosure I got a terrible 'clicking printhead' issue. What happened was that the increased temperature in the enclosure combined with the heat coming off the extruder motor was enough to melt the filament (PLA) before it entered the main bowden tube. My solution was to attach a 40mm fan and a duct that blows air onto the extruder gears. It requires a longer bowden tube to replace the short bowden tube above the filament sensor.

Do you have your psu inside the enclosure?
