Re: Layer shifting

I've tried a 0.05mm print of a part from a cosplay prop I am working on, there is layer shifting in the X axis again! I am going to let the print finish but I wish I could work out what is causing it. Do people know if it's mechanical problems or software?

Re: Layer shifting

I have also been having shifting problems with the 150 firmware. Printing a default model from the SD card.

Re: Layer shifting

I told support about my belt tension on the X is 284, I was told to tighten the belt but I physically can't get it any tighter. I have no idea how I am supposed to get more tension, it's not like the belt stretches. Then support told me to loosen the belt and at this point I just want to give up with it as clearly support don't know either! I am kind of at a loss as what to do. It's my first printer and I am really regretting buying the kit right now 🙁

Re: Layer shifting

Unfortunately I had layer shift as well, b150, with belt tension in range and no quality issues. It's been printing absolutely stunning small models, no ringing, absolutely perfect build process and amazing overall experience.

I left a huge overnight print, X shifted 5-6mm in the morning. The crash detect counter went from 4 during my testing to 20, so presumably it did recover many times and then shifted one time without detecting it. Or the nozzle hit something. Using the Prusa Silver.

Re: Layer shifting

I've not had any shift problems since I change back off b150 to b143 firmware. Printer is working brilliantly.

Re: Layer shifting

I have had layer shifting since upgrading to the latest firmware as well. This is both with S3D and Slic3r.

Re: Layer shifting

Well, I had another layer shift today.

I have a part for my lack table project which I sliced with S3D. I have printed the same part from the SD card 6 times with flawless results. Today I printed it a 7th time and had a 1-2mm layer shift around the 85% done range. No reason why the print should have shifted. I also have an issue with the auto load and filament sensor turning itself off that I mentioned in another thread. I am rolling back from 150 also. Lets hope the next firmware solves whatever is causing these issues.

Re: Layer shifting

I see I'm not the only one with layer shift issues on my MK3, primarily on the Y axis but some shift being X+Y. I've been seeing multiple different symptoms, and things did seem to get worse with B150.

This is the first model I started seeing shifts. This seemed to be tied a bit to this model as some previous stock prints were not so extremely shifted.

This is the most recent set of prints after updating to b150. Even going back to stock prints on SD at lower speeds, while some are OK, I am seeing a shift on the bottom few layers, and then this big shift in the higher castle layers. They always seem to correct but gets quite out of sorts.

I've done a simple check of my belt tension and drag on the Y-Axis and I loosened my belt slightly as I thought it may have been over-tight, and I still see the lower layer shift. Do these shifts give an indication of the possible problem? Y-Axis adjustment, firmware issue? Thanks for your help.

That definitely looks like a pulley slipping on the motor shaft to me. Try checking that the grub screws in the pulley are tightened properly, and that one of them rests on the flat part of the motor shaft.

Re: Layer shifting

I had layer shift on the y axis while printing a large pineapple planter. Another user on this thread mentioned turning off crash detection. I tried it and my 30 hour print is about 24 hours in and looking great! Could the spool holder design cause slight jerks against the extruder and cause a false crash detection? I had about 35+ crashes detected on the failed print.

Re: Layer shifting

Hi Everybody,

I received my MK3 on the 29th of january 2018, Firmaware 3.1.1_RC5_b150. First prints were small prints. Prints were very nice. I have been printing bigger parts for 3 days (between 3 and 10 hours each parts) and gets layer shifting of about 2mm sometimes on X sometine on Y after 2 hours printing. No at every print but more than 1/2.

As suggested in previous posts, I moved back to Firmaware 3.1.1_RC4_b143. No shifting anymore with similar prints.

Re: Layer shifting

I got lazy and did not downgrade the firmware like I said in my last post. Today after a 20 hour print of all the extruder parts for the MK3, I had two layer shifts in the parts.

Just downgraded to RC4 and re-started the print. I wonder if there has been any progress on figuring out why these shifts are happening.

Re: Layer shifting

3.1.1 final (198) firmware has now been released. See the "The most important links - Original Prusa i3 MK3" thread.

Re: Layer shifting

I have tried this latest 198, the original 150 and the previous 143 firmwares, but the printer is still not usable. 🙁

Sometimes the printing is great, but the layer shifting is present most of the times.

Re: Layer shifting

ive just updated firmware and in the first print it has had one crash on the x axis of 1mm I'm going to leave it as its 4 hours in to a 12 hour job, I have thought it was sounding quieter but that could be because in just printing long arc shapes so no jerking , I think I will flash back to 143 after this has finished. what should belt tensions be ? mine were pretty tight when I built it but I think and would presume that they would stretch very slightly ?

Re: Layer shifting

I'm about 5 hours into a print with 198, printing from SD with crash detect off. So far all ok. Can it be the crash detect that is causing the shifting?

Re: Layer shifting

Had a layer shift on the last two prints on firmware 150. Crash detection turned on.

Starting another large print in a bit, so I'll update to 198 and try it with crash detection off to see if it helps.

Re: Layer shifting

7.5 hour PETG print from SD card now finished on f/w 198 with crash detect off. Height of print 66mm, hardly any ringing or stringing and no sign of layer shift. Crash detect now my number one suspect.
