Layer shifting

Layer shifting on my MK3.

- Current firmware RC5
- Printing via SD card

Should I disable the crashdetection and filament sensor? Feels like a step down to the MK2S.

hey Joeri
I'm waiting for your picture.
But your photo does not reflect.

Re: Layer shifting

I too have had a layer shift today, my very first one ever from a Prusa machine. Joyously it was half way through a nine hour print but as the shift was only a mm or so in the x direction I let it run. I now have a superb spool holder with an extremely annoying step in it.

Mk3, f/ware RC5, printing from FlashAir SD card.

Re: Layer shifting

I also have had layer shifting on MK3 prints. Twice on the x axis (at about 70 mm). I then re-sliced the model after the second attempt/failure, but still got a shift, this time on the y at around 22mm. Running latest FW and Slic3r PE versions and belt tension is within spec ( 257 on x and 265 on y). Running direct from SD card.

Is disabling those two items the work-around?

doesn't seem to make a difference, I just had shifting on 150b. reflashing 143e, ughh.

Re: Layer shifting

Never had layer shifting until I loaded b150. Now 90% of prints have layer shifting. Going back to b143.

Re: Layer shifting

I've run six of the attached without any shifting or problems at all. Then I updated to 150 and the last two and both shifted, the last one by a large amount. Going to go back to 143 until it can be sorted. Each piece is 180mm high so it's a big loss of material and time, fortunately I stopped this one early enough. Machine was purchased assembled and until 150 never given any problems

Re: Layer shifting

I'm holding off 150 having read the comments on the forum https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/original-prusa-i3-mk3-f30/new-firmware-print-issues-with-infill-t13773.html

I had layer shifting on several prints on 143b, though it was most reproducible when transitioning from the thin walled perimeter to infill.

My initial hypotheses were that the nozzle or PINDA sensor where hitting the print or that the acceleration settings in Slic3r were too high causing missing steps. I double checked the calibrated the PINDA (in the 0.7mm range) but on one subsequent large print I still got a shift. Like you it was disappointing that it happened after a long print.

I then reduced the acceleration down from 3500mm/s2 to 1000mm/s2 and the stepping has gone and the infill speed to 100mm/s. Maybe that could help you?

I'm still battling with ringing and ghosting though 🙁

I guess, that PR team working hard on this problem according to last commit: https://github.com/prusa3d/Prusa-Firmware/commit/09e0c566e883c778a7b40b4f2e5293dd0b3794dc

Re: Layer shifting

Same issue here (printing using normal mode).

Firmware: 3.1.1 RC5 - 150
Slic3r PE - 1.38-7 (I used 0.15mm optimal MK3 print settings).

The layers were shifted to the front (Y axis forwards) by ~ 1mm after about 2 hours of printing.

Re: Layer shifting

I had the same issue with b150. Turned off crash detection and it cleared it up.

Re: Layer shifting

I just upgraded to 3.1.1 RC5 and first print of the day I get a layer shift. It took me a few but I found the link to the older 3.1.1 files if you want to "upgrade" back to RC4 https://www.prusa3d.com/downloads/firmware/

Re: Layer shifting

Changed back to 143 RC4 and repeated the previous design without any problems.
Print quality is brilliant again without changing any settings.

Slic3R Prusa Edition - 1.38.7
0.20 mm FAST MK3
Generic PLA (from Rigid Ink)
Standard settings with no modifications
Printing from SD card

Re: Layer shifting

I have the same problem 3 times now. Managed a 14 hour print without a problem and now have another shift.

This occurred after a notable thump noise.

I have gone back to RC 143.

Re: Layer shifting

Same big layer shifting with B150 (~1mm) on most print. Problem solved by returning to B143 and disabling the linear advance.

Re: Layer shifting

I have not had any layer shifts since I received my printer mid December. I have exclusively printed from the SD card until the octoprint issues stabilize. Sliced with both S3D and Slic3r with no issues until today.

Firmware: 3.1.1 RC5 - 150
Slic3r PE - 1.38-6 (I used 0.15mm optimal MK3 print settings).

Print shifted on the X axis by about 15mm.

No idea why? 😕

Re: Layer shifting

Silly question. Where are you getting Slic3r PE 1.38.7? I think the latest in the drivers was 1.38.6. Just wondering. Thanks in advance.

Re: Layer shifting

I am experiencing layer shifting too!

I've happened on various prints which then failed, but I caught this one in time https://imgur.com/gallery/X5GC8 As you can see, rather large shift across the print. My other prints that haven't shifted (small, low height prints) exhibit quite a bit of ringing.

Re: Layer shifting

My first large print with the MK3 also showed a layer shift. This is updated with the RC5 firmware, printed from the files on the SD card. Crash detection and filament sensor both were on.
