Hello,
i have an idea :
when the nozzle of the printer is printing the first layer of something, i noticed that between Z motor and the x-carriage 3d printed piece, there is a lot of space.(on the mk2s but on the mk3 too during the NY maker-faire)
So if we rise the 2 Z motors a little, the X axis could go higher, ( the metal frame should be modified a little to be higher too).
I don't know why they(you) didn't do that for the MK3, Especially that the mk2s was not planned to be possibly upgraded in the mk3
so they(you) could have modified the metal frame (i think it's to late for changing that in the mk3).
If someone know why they didn't do that, i am interested.

The main issue is frame rigidity.
When you design a frame for a 3D printer, something called "racking" occurs near the joints of a frame. By making the frame taller, the amount of torque on the y-axis is increased and makes the frame less stable. When they switched to the aluminum extrusions on the y axis, this improved frame rigidity, and thus they could raise the max z height by 10 mm.
You could very much raise the motors, but then you raise the center of mass, and it has problems stated above.

That is my guess.

I'm thinking of this same kind of upgrade, mostly because, long term, I'd like to increase the print area even more...

Would it be possible to maybe change out the aluminium supports for steel, or heavier duty aluminium maybe, on the Mk3 if you wanted to expand it even more? (although the new flexible metal print sheet might make this a little more difficult..)

Look here for how to increase z-height - and not only by 10 mm but 60 mm. I am currently working on it and will update when my mk3 upgrade kit will arrive.
