Great first layer, but next 10mm are warping

Attempted my first 20 hour print. When finished, it looked amazing!

However, after removing from the bed, the bottom 10mm or so of layers are warped like mad. First layer is perfect though and no adhesion problems at all.

The top of this picture is the bottom layers closest to the bed.

This is the first layer and the bottom surface that was on the bed of the second part.

Both parts were printed at the same time.

Prusa mk3
Atomic PLA royal blue
215/210 nozzle
55/60 bed
Disable fan first layer, 100% after
.15 layer height
20% honeycomb infill
45mm/s

I dont think thats warping.. thats overhang.

When those layers are printed, they are in thin air s have nothing to lie on.

You need to either design your prints sympathetic to the limitations of FDM printing (ie give them a flat bottom).. or pehrpas use “supports”

Thanks. This is my first 3d printer, so I'm still learning. I didn't think such a small overhang needed supported. Especially when things like those round pegs printed exceptionally well. So if I added some supports, this should print out fine?

I didn't design this. This is an official Makerbot design that someone cut into 2 pieces to fit on beds smaller than Makerbot's.

Supports will stop it from sagging, but it wont give you the same finish as the rest of the print.

When you have extreme overhangs, the filament is not pressed down, so creates the finish you see.

The best solution to this is to design the object without this kind of overhang.

Curious that Makerbot flagged this as not needing supports.

Edit: Well I guess I should have dug down in the comments. A lot of people cut off the bottom 1-2mm in the slicer because they were having issues with the overhang. I must say though, if Makerbot can handle those overhangs, I'm quite impressed.

I was just going on the initial photos.. i didnt see the design,

If its been designed correctly then it should print OK, but probably not the best print to start with. You need to get your printer and cooling dailed in frst..

I would start with the Benchy first until you can get the bow smooth and them you should, have no problem with this type of print.

My general rule when designing for FDM is for overhangs not to go below 60 degrees from the bed. These will build just fine without supports even up to a .3mm layer height. If your building at .1mm layer height then you could possibly get away with going down to 40 degrees.
