Filament gets stuck as time goes on.

I can print the first few layers of a Pikachu nice. But as time goes on it gets worse and the filament eventually no longer comes out of the nozzle.

The extruder gears don't seem to be clicking but more likely grinding against the still filament. Attached are photos of examples, I've been trying to do cold pulls if there is something stuck in the hotend.

Attached is a photo, printing PLA. As I noticed the increase in problems I lowered the print speed to 50% which didn't change the issue.
Thanks for the advice!

Re: Filament gets stuck as time goes on.

It Happens to me some times as well with no apparent reason.

I love my printer, I am sure it will get sorted out soon.

What temperature? What slicer/settings?

It does seem like underextrusion that is getting worse as you go up. Generally that would mean:

  • too cold at the nozzle

  • printing too fast (but slowing down 50% and it not helping is a counterindication)

  • extruder not grabbing
  • You might tighten your extruder bolts a bit and see if that helps, and (counterintuitively) loosen your extruder bolts a bit and see if that helps.

Tightening will help if they are currently loose and can't really grip the filament well. That would explain what you are seeing. At some point there is a bit of a backup, the extruder can't grip and grinds the filament, and then you have several layers or more with weak or no extrusion.

Loosening could help if they are currently too tight and are deforming (crushing) the filament. This can make the filament too wide to fit down the precisely sized tubing to the hot end.

Next time you have a bad layer like the top of the pikachu, stop the print, unload the filament, and look at it. If there is a thin spot ~3-4 inches from the end, that could be the extruder grinding. Look for teeth marks on the filament below there. There will always be some, but if they are very noticeable you might try loosening up and see if that helps.

Were I in your position, I would raise the hot end temp by 5C (if you are at 210 or below already), try it again slow, and experiment with the extruder tightness.

Thanks for the advice! I don't know the slicer settings (sorry still new to 3d printing). I know the extrusion was set to .15mm for better detail. And was printed at regular settings for PLA on the MK3 210 degrees, 60 bed temp.

I printed the attached at 70% Speed, 220 degrees, and lowered the fan speed to 200. Better but still not great.

I have another print underway where the gears are tightened a little bit more at 215 degrees, 50% speed, 200 Fan speed. And will post the results!

    what slicer do you use?

slic3r? prusa control? cura? simplify3d? craftware?

What filament are you using? I've been having similar problems (except it jams completely), and it only happens with a particular spool of white PLA that I have. Other filaments work fine.

    Prusa Control

I'm using a white PLA as well. Materio 3D cold white.

On the current print I'm running into the same issues again as soon as I reach Pikachu's neck hours 30mins in. 215 degrees, 50% speed, and 200 fan speed.

As soon as I noticed the issue was happening again I increased the temp to 220 degrees, tightened the extruder gears one clock rotation, lowered print speed to 30%, and 160 fan speed but it looks like it's going to continue to the point of stopping extrusion completely.

    EDIT:

Yeah same as before, once I noticed the issues happening again I tried to adjust as mentioned above and it stopped extruding

Have you tried a different model? Just curious if there is something amis with the stl file that is doing something weird. You never know!

Aren't there some models that come with the printer? If those print fine then you can probably rule out a hardware problem.
