CR-10s works right out of the box just replace glass with a 12x12 mirror from hardware store 30 minutes to build 15 minutes to level. Print the standard upgrades and go

Pros
larger bed
firmware works correctly (unlike the PRUSA MK3 firmware)
frame is square (no wobbling like PRUSA MK3 frame)
with mirror no need for mesh bed leveling (mirror bed is level unlike the PRUSA MK3 bed)

Cons
Bigger 12v bed takes longer to heat can be solved a ac heat bed
Bowden Flexables are not easy to print without modifications

If you want to make it a killer convert it 24v with ac heat bed, ensey rambo board, micro swiss full metal hot end or even better I have seen some with a titan aero

I'm not disappointed with the MK3, but I guess my eyes were bigger than my expectations. All the advertised pictures looked big as life, but as I'm building it I'm noting "wow, that's smaller than I thought"... lol

Thanks for the recommendation. I've been holding out for Prusa to release a larger printer setup, but I don't foresee that happening anytime soon. Right now I'm leaning towards the Creality3d CR10s5. I really like that it offers a 500x500 print area. I wish it did have autobed leveling, but from the watching a lot of the youtube videos, the printer does really well. The one thing I'm not a fan of is the bowden setup as I like the direct drive setup. I'll need to do some looking to see if anyone has converted their creality printer to direct drive.

I'm pretty new to 3D printing. The Prusa i3 Mk3 is my first printer and I really like it. There have been a couple of times so far when I wish I had a bigger build volume (mostly XY). I also wanted a second printer so I could do some things in parallel, so I got a CR-10S. I don't have it completely dialed in yet, but I have to say, for my usage patterns, I would have preferred a bigger Mk3. I believe I'll get the CR-10S where I want it to be, but it's a bit more "fiddly" and not quite as refined as the Prusa. If Prusa had a larger model, I'd buy it.

I'm thinking of buying a bigger 3D printer, but I've just been stewing on it wishing PRUSA would make one. For all that's said about them I think they are a good company. I plan on getting the MMU 2.0, but I'll be soon taking the plunge and buying a large scale printer.

CR-10, CR-10S, CR-10 S4, CR-10 S5, Tevo Tornado, Tronxy X5S are your main options. I order a CR-10S last night, will be here on Wednesday, hopefully it is not rubbish.

I have a Cr10 and it is easier to get up and running than a MK3 you will be printing in 45min to 1 hour after you open the box. there is only 1 thing you need to print perfect and it is a 12x12 mirror which you can get at the big box stores to replace the glass that comes with the printer. the included glass is not perfectly flat.

I would buy 3 Prusa MK3XL's!

Prusa should partner with with E3D on a 'Volcano' hot end with a Titan style geared extruder.
They could scale up the MK3 to 12x12x18 and charge $1900.

With the Volcano nozzle, Titan extruder, and a .8mm ruby nozzle it would print large objects very quickly!

I would be down to buy a larger Prusa, especially if they went to the 500x500x500 size. And my local maker space manager stated they would be willing to go with larger Prusa's as well. Heck, there is rumor that Prusa is getting ready to release an SLA printer. I and most makers I have talked with would prefer a larger print volume over SLA.

a large format "cartesian" will have shit quality...(ringing anyone??) plus the power supply to heat that bed would be huge. it would need to be AC... i wouldn't go above 12" on a cartesian... anything else should be coreXY or other motion system.

For most of the people there is no need for bigger printer.
Big means more space required, higher power usage, longer printers. If you want to do it better then CR10, it will cost more. Most likely $1500 - $2000, so more expensive.

In most cases you can just print in smaller parts with the current Prusa. So it's like a set thing that PruSLA will come. Either this or next year so you can print something with higher resolution. Something you can't do with current Prusa.

Friend of mine has one and it works great. He's been printing stuff for me while I fight my MK3.

Larger print area for me means I can print more things at one time, not necessarily larger things. Printing Larger things is going to be very useful though.

I was hoping PRUSA was going to come out with a larger printer or announcement this summer but I gave up after and purchased a Cr-10 S5. I can't complain about the printer for the price I paid which was $564. I purchased it on Ebay with that 15% off coupon and the printer does have the newer Creality board V 2.1 and also had the run out filament sensor along with dual z axis stepper motors.

I've printed a few things and am still working on dialing in the settings. I've never used a Bowden setup before so increasing retraction distance has helped quite a bit. I just copied my Prusa I3 MK2 settings and imported them for my creality print settings but made a few other changes. I would have gladly paid twice as much for Prusa to have a larger printer with some of the Creality shortcomings. I miss the PEI sheet on my Prusa I3 MK2 which I'll be upgrading my CR-10S too, and I really miss the direct drive setup for PETG.

I'm considering purchasing a Titan Aero direct drive extruder and purchasing a E3D V6 volcano nozzle with probably a .6mm or .8mm nozzle. What are you guys thoughts on this and do you have any suggestions that I should look into or change? I've heard I should also look into the Titan Aero Trianglelabs clone which I heard is pretty good, but I'm thinking it might be better just going with a genuine setup.

This is a Prusa forum and most of the discussions are about the original Prusa. I think Creality forum would be a better place to ask about CR-10 modifications. You will most likely don't get much response to that question.

I am quite happy with the print volume of the MK3. I had to rotate a few parts to get them to fit, but it is workable.

From a mechanical perspective, a larger build volume would involve several changes. A wider tray would increase the possibility of racking. This can be offset by making the tray longer, increasing both width and length. Not sure if the single stepper motor to move the tray would need to be increased in size. There could be a lot of mass to move back and forth if the build volume was increased.

The other option is simply increasing the bed length. As others have mentioned, this is a relatively simple mechanical change. It could be as simple as longer rods, longer aluminum extrusions, and a larger tray.

Increasing height is relatively easy, but probably less desirable than increasing width or length.

My vote for an increased build volume would be a longer bed length. Increase the build volume from 25x21x21cm to 25x31x21cm. This could be offered as an upgrade kit.

If I knew they were going to come out with something larger I would have waited. I ended up buying a CR-10 S5 for my bigger projects. I ordered the heatbed upgrade and bl-touch auto leveling and I get all this in my MK3. Not the bl-touch, but once you get the MK3 tuned in it's rock solid. I've had to re-do my bed leveling twice now on three prints. I'm still learning the little things though.

I'll add my vote for a Prusa i3 MK3 XL. I would buy one if it existed today.

12" (305mm) in one dimension is a sweet spot as someone mentioned earlier in the thread.

I think it is as simple as increase the two aluminum extrusions on Y-axis, two longer rods, a longer belt. Not sure if the cabling needs to be increased to make this to happen.

Could possibly leave the same heated bed, and just increase the length of the PEI sheet. A bit of a hack, but might be good enough.

A DIY hack might be to 3D print some extrusion extensions 🙂
