Prusa We need a larger 3d Printer
Anyone else interested in a larger 3d printer. I've owned my I3 mk2 for almost a year and I'm looking to purchase another 3d printer. Are there any plans to make a printer with a bed size of say twice the standard i3 mk2? Anyone else on the forum interested in this?
For those of you with a larger 3d printers, what are you running and do you recommend it? I'd like to pick up a larger printer by years end. I could piece together a diy kit and make it out of 80/20 aluminmum extrusion, but I'd just assume spend a bit more and get a kit that just works.

if i wanted anything it would be a longer bed, for long thin items.
but for every cm longer the bed becomes, the chassis needs to become 2cm longer, so it would soon become unwieldy!

My nephew and his dad are going to purchase a CR-10 for Christmas. They don't know which model:
* 300 mm x 300 mm x 400 mm (11.8" x 11.8" x 15.7")
* 400 mm x 400 mm x 400 mm (15.7" x 15.7" x 15.7")
I tried to talk them into purchasing an Original Prusa for the mesh bed leveling and future upgrades, but they saw my MK2s and said that it is too small. They are willing to pay extra for better quality (eg, Original Prusa). However, They want the bigger size. The CR-10 printers are selling like hot cakes because of their size.
Josef, please create a bigger printer for us! You can have two models:
* Original Prusa i3
* Original Prusa i3 XL
If the XL version has a width or depth of 350 mm or more, I will purchase one! Thanks!

I too would absolutely love a larger format Prusa machine, something like a 500x500x? with the new features of the MK3 it would easily be the best large format machine on the market.

I'm on a facebook group for the Hypercube Evolution. Its a customizable printer to any size you want with a spreadsheet of how big you need to make the parts with optional single and dual z setups. I've been tempted to make a 300x300x300 build volume (most common) or taller. The price of the parts come out to about what it would cost for a prusa i3 Kit. I haven't needed to print anything that large... yet.

Joan is right you may not make bigger projects, but longer ones would increase your capabilities.

How hard would it be to double or even triple the size of the bed to allow for longer parts with the current width? Just by looking at a video of the operation it looks possible. This could be an additional upgrade to an existing model?

a larger print volume would be nice 300x300x300 would be a great addition to what i already have. also make it like a Prusa I3 MK3 printer in the bigger volumesize.

12" is a sweet spot. Sadly 300mm is a hair shy of 12". So I'd want 350mm or 400mm.

I'd like it wider or deeper (pref wider) so I can print longer items, and taller so I can print that darn uke I've been wanting to print in one solid piece. I'd pay more for a larger machine AND be willing to rebuild my enclosure.

Less work would have to be done with making it longer. Making it wider would require an entire new frame setup. With software the orientation doesn't matter.
The easiest way to increase the size is to increase the bed length.

That's unfortunate, because for every 1" in length it adds 2" of required space, while 1" of width adds 1" of required space, right (or do I have the axis swapped)?
Also, would it not be easier mechanically to move the x axis more (extra width) rather than having to move a larger print further along the y axis (I'm thinking of shaking and just weight/skipping issues)
I understand that it adds complexity to the mfg process. I guess with everything there is a trade off.

CR-10, CR-10S, CR-10 S4, CR-10 S5, Tevo Tornado, Tronxy X5S are your main options. I order a CR-10S last night, will be here on Wednesday, hopefully it is not rubbish.

I would like a print area of 310mm x 310mm x 310mm at least.
I wonder if PRUSA switched to all aluminium extrusion would be a good idea? That way they could offer a variety of sizes at very little extra cost as it would just mean packaging the chosen sizes of aluminium extrusion and the right size heatbed. The firmware and software would just require a settings option where you specify which size you are using. The could perhaps do three sizes, small, medium, and large, something along these lines?:
Small = 210mm x 210mm x 210mm.
Medium = 310mm x 310mm x 310mm.
Large = 410mm x 410mm x 410mm.
They could even include an option in the settings for a 'custom' size which you can set, that way if you want to you could use your own aluminium extrusion pieces to make a different size (unsupported by PRUSA of course).

Ahem, all the rod lengths would change and to support the longer spans without deflection diameters would have to change as well. Different belt lengths and probably widths required. All of which means a redesign of the plastic parts.
Open source does mean any maker can experiment with other sizes, but I doubt it makes commercial sense for Prusa to dilute and complicate their manufacturing and support.

Bigger machine would have to move to ether extrusion based linear motion on V-wheels or larger rods like 10mm. Also AC Mains heater. note that larger the bed, larger the heater and the larger the heater the more power it needs... soon as you exceed 1600 watts you need a new 20-30amp dedicated circuit. course depends if you want to go up to 100-120c with even temps.
i think the gMax+ is like 15" ? has an AC heater. i don't think it uses a glass bed though. the larger the bed the more weight the more ringing means you print slower. maybe they could do a 4-5mm heated PCB but larger it is the harder it is to keep flat. would need better mesh leveling and it would be more tan 9 points so i think 32 bit electronics is a must at that point.
However, large parts are nice but TWO printers printing each half a part would always be quicker. then you glue it. usually the glue is just as strong as the FDM part since this isn't injection molding. ABS can practically melt together too with ABS/acetone glue.
