hotend insulation

hi guys, anybody here who has insulated the hotend of his printer with cotton based insulation & kapton tape ?

i'm asking because the blue socks are only available for the genuine V6 heater style block.

i even found a guy who sells silicon covers that should fit for the clone hotends, but it looks like they are selfmade and furthermore he was only able to test them up to 290°C.

Re: hotend insulation

Hi Jeff

My first printer (a Chinese clone) came without extruder insulation other than a wrap of kapton tape (also holding the thermistor in place), but the quality of parts and various blockages meant that the threads in the heater block didn't last too long.

When I bought a replacement block, it came with the fabric (ceramic - not cotton) tape held in place with a Kapton wrap. It worked very well (I think better than the sock) but it didn't improve print quality which was never more than OK. Then one day, I was looking to buy filament and came across PR. At the time, they only had 3mm printers (the Mk0, I guess...) available, but as soon as the Mk1 went on sale I bought one and never looked back.

Peter

PS Those "socks" you linked look as though they are 3d printed...

Yeah, the silicon insulation from ebay looks like moulded in a printed form. so I'm just thinking about printing an own mould, especially for the hotend i got, and filling it up with 2 component high-temperature silicon, just in it's assembled state (with thermistor and heater-element in place).
I found some red silicon which can withstand 450°C for a short time... so it shouldn't be any problematic with steady temperatures up to 275°C.

But at first I'll try out the cotton stuff and fix it with kapton tape.

yes, that's the way i've found the 450°C 2-component silicone stuff @ ebay (linked through the thingiverse article).
furthermore there's another one, with a 2-piece mold, that you can easily disassemble after moulding.
