Fixing rattling print fan / maintenance

I think a lot of people know the problem with the rattling print fan. I even bought a new one which only last a month before it joined the club of rattlers.

So i decided to try something out, and it turned out quite well:

1. Take of the fan (2x M3 Screws)

2.  Carefully remove the front cover of the fan with a small flat screwdriver (3x clips)

3. Take a brush and remove all the dust of the fan blades

4. Remove the sticker on the back of the printer (keep sticker!)

5. Add a view drops of OIL* in the center of the shaft while holding it horizontal and slightly move the fan up and down (axial)

6. Turn on your printer and press a few times the RESET button until the oil (fan run for a few seconds on startup)

7. Degrease the back surface and put the sticker on its original place to cover the hole.

8. Snap the cover back on the fan.

Finished 🙂

Regarding OIL:

I only had the Prusa Lubrycant and WD40 whereby the the first one is too thick (viscous) and the WD40 too thin. So i tried to mix them up until i reached the viscosity of olive oil and applied it with a pipette to the fan bearing. Probably olive oil will doo the job as well:)

Advanced Maintenance for people with a hot glue gun and a lot of time:

You may have noticed in step 6 vibrations which results from an unbalanced blade.

The approach to balance the blade is more by trial and error and could require some time + a hot glue gun.

1. Hold the print fan in your hand and press reset (fan turns on for a few seconds)-> try to remember the amount of vibrations

2. Add a drop of hot glue on a random place on the planar surface of the fan (flat dots)

2,5. Drink from your beer 🍺

3. If the vibrations are worse or the same-> remove the hotglue dot and place another dot a few degrees beside

If the vibrations are less then you are on the right way-> iterate Step 1 to 3 until you are satisfied or drunken.

YEEEAAHHH! 🙂

Good tips, but I would never use WD40 for lubrication... It is great for removing chewing gum and displacing water.

@robert-rmm200 You are right, WD40 alone is too thin and want last long.

Thats why i mixed it up with the grease.
