Re: E3D Volcano Height Adjust

Hi Stephan,

one thing I realized when printing with the MK2S is that it's too slow for many larger mechanical parts and for those, I also don't need the detail the original setup with 0.4 mm nozzle can deliver. Now changing just the nozzle doesn't help because throughput is limited by the E3D v6 hotend. So this is how I came across the Volcano - I think for many parts it could significantly reduce the print time.
I am just wondering why not more people seem to use it? Is print quality really much worse? So I am interested in your experience - what do you think?

I really think I will try out the volcano - but I also think I want to keep the detail repruduction of the original hotend with the shorter melt zone (and resultingly more precise retracts). Ideally I could swap both hotends (building two printers with different hotends is out of the question right now - I don't want to waste that much space) without much effort, which would mean I have to redesign the printhead to include an interface for quickly swapping the hotend. Maybe one could swap the entire head (hotend, PINDA, extruder motor) or maybe just the hotend, I am not sure. I am waiting for the 3D files to be published and will have a look then.

Re: E3D Volcano Height Adjust

Sorry Martin, I got cock-blocked by two parts out of stock or I'd have example prints to share with community. As it is, I refuse to print without end sock as I run hot filaments mainly and already melted off stock part nozzle and back of extruder-cover parts. No E3D volcano socks or Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX 12V in stock in USA right now which is required for my Volcano kit plans.

The plan is,

  • assess feasibility of modular head assembly mod for MK2S - not looking good

  • lifted z-axis-bottom (Astrodyn damper version)

  • adjustable bump-stop z-axis-top

  • PINDA plunger - Already Installed

  • Long nose part fan duct
  • I still need to make sure Firmware hacks aren't necessary. As I've read so far, all hacking seems to be related to z-height and calibration issues which my kit hopefully obviates simply through hardware mods. Any alterations should be had in slicer settings and/or amendment G-code. Cross fingers!

    Re: E3D Volcano Height Adjust

So this afternoon I have been busy to get the MK3 extruder into Alibre design. Prusa STL files are horrific to work with, finally with OpenSCAD, Freecad and Meshmixer I managed to import most parts in a useable form (not as polygon mesh).

That's the basis - current setup with the volcano nozzle right to the regular one. Z difference is 8.5 mm. As Stephan points out, it would be nice not to have to adjust the firmware (especially when we want to quickly swap the two hotends). But I am not sure if swapping the hotend is realistic. Making the extruder assembly modular will be difficult either way (swapping the entire extruder assembly: Tons of cables, swapping hotend only: Very poor accessibility). Also, the temperature controller will probably need a different parameter set as mass (thermal time constant) of normal and volcanov version is different.
Just made a nice 3D PDF with all elements but: it seems we can't attach PDFs here.

I bricked the board twice. 😈

If Slic3r source code and Arduino libraries installed correctly, Arduino IDE should detect RAMBo board, and check the serial port before building and uploading the firmware.

Printing speed of E3D Volcano with 0.8 mm nozzle goes up two or three times faster than E3D V6's 0.4 mm nozzle. The surface finish of layer height 0.5 mm looks clean. It saves big time which I like.

I'd like to share Slic3r settings for E3D Volcano Hotend with 0.8mm nozzle.
Printing speed at 20 mm/s produces near identical quality printing like the 0.4 mm nozzle that came with E3D V6 Hotend.
E3D suggested me to use a different Slicer program which made me upset after few weeks of help request. 🙁

How is the vulcano so far? Also print quality wise vs the stock hotend.

I plan on upgrading one of my MK3 machines with a Vulcano and a 0.4 + 0.6mm Nozzle.

Without a sock, what's the highest volcano temperature that won't cause damage? I need to know so that I don't accidentally cross that threshold.

Without an answer, I'm thinking maybe I should print replacement parts now, before I convert, while I still have a working printer....

I think maybe you can attach it as a zip file. At least, that worked for me when I posted a hex file (which otherwise would have been rejected as an upload).

P.S. For anyone interested, I posted the modified v3.2.1 firmware here: https://shop.prusa3d.com/forum/user-mods-octoprint-enclosures-nozzles--f65/is-the-24v-volcano-heater-block-the-correct-match--t18527-s10.html

Thank you for posting your volcano slic3er settings! Yours are the only ones I've been able to find anywhere!

Have you refined them at all since your post, or are the settings stable? I'm just about to install and use a Volcano on my Prusa I3 MK3, and I'd like to start with a "known good" setup.

I had to modify the extruder body to print FLEX filament.

I replaced the PTFE tube in the E3D hotend with longer, pointy one to remove the gap.

Hi guys, I have installed the volcano and fan mod from thingiverse https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2933706 on my mk3 i3 but having real trouble editing the firmware. I dont suppose someone can share the edited firmware file? thanks so much.
