I do work doing preparedness for utilities. It's frustrating being grounded when so many agencies need help.

Hi

@Bobstro and neophyl: That is a lot of progress, a lot of info for me, thank you. I found in your lists some brands that I can also find locally at good prices, the fact that you used it successfully give me some confidence that I will not buy something that I cannot use as it happens now with 1kg of Sakata and 1kg of  Devil Design filaments. I will wrote also to Devil Design to see their opinion, I will come back as soon as I have some news from them.

Kind regards,

Daniel

PS: For those interested Colorfabb has 25% off for a lot of filaments,  and they are shipping worldwide. Happy printing 😀 .

My favorite US-based resellers both carry the Colorfabb line. They aren't showing any sales, but the pricing may still be competitive:

With Amazon slowing things down, this is a good time to get acquainted with companies that are directly involved in our community and the small manufacturing response efforts. It's always tempting to go to the corporate Amazon monolith first, but we need to support the people doing the work as well.

If it wasn't for this Topic, my inbox would be empty. 😀

PLA:

  • Original Prusa silver that came with kit - Prusament profile - good
  • MG  Chemicals of various colours - pricey $$ - Prusament profile - as good or better than the Prusa silver. My goto filament for everyday use.
  • filaments.ca Neet spooled premium - reasonable $ - Prusament profile - 100+ hours continuous  printing with zero problems. May no longer be available
  • Materio3D - expensive $$$ - Prusament oe Generic profile - ruined prints after 8-10 hours due to no extrusion

PETG:

  • Filaments.ca black and orange - reasonable $$ - Prusament or Generic PET profile - I really like the black. Good prints using the same Z height as PLA. I didn't know I was supposed to lower it. Ignorance was bliss. 😀

NOTE: I use the above profiles basically without changes that would affect flow, etc. I just modify first layer temp if any adhesion issues ( orange PETG - increase by +5 degrees ).

I use filaments.ca purge filament to clean nozzle and I leave a small piece in the extruder when I am not printing for a while. This way, I know the nozzle has been purged of the last filament.

The only one of these that may be available reasonably $ might be MG Chemicals who has an office in UK.

I had to switch to Materio3D in the middle of a project at about 2x the cost, but I through half of it away because of print failures. Bringing the effective cost of a spool to close to 80$ CAD.

Price is not always an indicator of how well it will print on  YOUR machine. Too many variables! For example: my spools can hang on my printer for a week before moisture causes any issues. ( I can hear people gasping )

Finally back printing after 3 weeks.

Kenn

P.S. For MG Chemicals and Materio3D, I just drive down to my reseller and pick it up.

RE: What filaments did you tested and with which results.

Perhaps the two brands you tried are actually bad filament, but have you ruled out the possibility your printer isn’t assembled or calibrated properly? Your printer really shouldn’t struggle with generic PLA. You may need to adjust temp and speed a little to get a quality print, but unless you truly got a bad filament you should get a decent to good print with the stock PLA profile or the Prusament PLA profile, no matter what brand of PLA it is. Just adjust if needed to the manufacturer’s recommended temp, and it should work. I just don’t see the point of cluttering the UI with literally thousands of brand and re-brand of filament, and the UI would become an unusable mess. The generic profiles should work well enough to get a decent print that you can then adjust. Knowing how to tune your prints to solve issues is far more valuable than a preset profile I think, and Prusa and others offer guides on this.

Assuming your printer is not at fault and you did get two bad spools of filament, can you get a refund? If not, are you actually saving money (not to mention time and frustration) over buying a quality known-good brand to start with? And do you have any guarantee if you do buy a different roll of cheap filament that worked for someone else, that the quality and tolerances from batch to batch are good enough so that it will actually work for you? Or work for you in the future? I’ve been printing for 7 years now and have gone through many dozens of different manufacturers and I have had a bad batch of filament, from a brand that had worked for me previously, literally destroy my printer due to clogs and damage to the hot end. I just don’t trust anyone except the big names anymore, it’s not worth it.

I have used a bunch with success.  Almost all manufacturers have a bad batch.

@bobstro

I see you have successfully printed with the PLA from Toner Plastic.

I am having issue with my 1st layer which never sticks to the bed.

The skirt sticks to the bed as well as the calibration square.

Is there a special extrusion setting or even temp that would work great with this filament.

I usually work with Prusament and Jessie. I never had this kind of issue.

Thank you for your input if you can.
