RE: Sticky tacky spray paint on PLA plastic?

@swiss_cheese

It is a typo and meant to be sarcastic.  My wife is into rocketry which is 90% male.  We welcome here to hopefully expand the hobby.  Not sure why more women do not join.

Lotsa women are into the maker/techie scene, probably more than you realize.

I know I might have come off too strong with that one remark, but on online fora, there's often a lot of "mansplaining" of the basics and assuming that those who ask simple questions are totally clueless newbees. (And it's not always men who do said mansplaining!) 🙂

I do appreciate the advice, and in this case it did point me in the right direction.

Too many times you post a question on line and you get condescending answers as if you know nothing, or worse, remarks about why you would possibly want to do something or do something a certain way.

Thanks again to those who pointed me in the right direction here!

That makes me happy.  I do not have a daughter, but I was always hoping my sister would get into the tech side of things.  She is a teacher but married an aeronautical engineer that is trying our to be an astronaut this summer.  I am proud of her either way.  She is exceptionally bright.

My rocket club sponsors college teams that increasingly including more programmers, engineers, and science majors that are women.  When I was in college, it was all guys.  It is refreshing to see more female interest.

Spend any time here and you'll no doubt find yourself "mansplaining" before too long. It's a lot easier to cut & paste a good answer when the same rudimentary questions are asked time and time again than spend the time and effort crafting a bespoke reply to the umpteenth question about bed adhesion. I figure it's better to provide a fire hose of information to a new user than not quite enough. The self-starters will read through it, ignore what they know or don't need, and glean the good bits out of it without being offended.

Nothing wrong with your question at all. Just don't assume a long-winded reply is meant in a condescending way! I always reply with the answer I wish I'd been given when I first asked a question.

I am curious: Did the paint ever dry and might it be used to fuse flat surfaces? Sounds like a solution that would be cheaper than some of the specialty adhesives I've seen.

Did you prime it first?

Ignore my question.  I saw on the prior page you did not.  I would recommend Rustoleum fusion primer.

RE: Sticky tacky spray paint on PLA plastic?

"mansplaining" I just finished doing it and I'm about to do it again.

I don't do it to be condescending, I do it to try and avoid playing 50 questions with a person because I really don't have a clue what a persons skill level is on this side of the screen, there are folks here that I have been chatting with for quite a while now and you think they understand something and then they show me a .3mf or a printed result, and you heavy *sigh* and realize they don't, and straight up you think "why the hell are you doing it that way" you cant help it.

It's simply something we have to deal with using this form of communication and the thousand/billions of possible combinations in this technology, not to mention the shear artistic decisions being made relative to an individuals definition of quality.

I try to make jokes and have fun with it, I don't care what country your from what religion you are, man, woman or child, I try to help, I try to gauge what the skill level of the person is (as best I can, which apparently isn't very good) and offer assistance.

Enjoy all

No, at first I didn't, but after it was pointed out here that I skipped the step, I went out and got some primer that was said to work on plastic. I let the primer dry 3 days and then forced any residual out on low in the air fryer.

Then I painted, let dry a day, and repeated in the air fryer.

It's far less tacky than it was without the primer and I am hoping it will be totally dry in a few more days.

I have spray painted an enamel on PLA and it dried normally. A lot of spray paints say they are suitable for plastics. Of course that is a dumb comment as plastics vary so much.

To follow up, no, it never really dried to the point that it is not slightly sticky to the touch. 🙁

However, a cow-orker 🙂 who does model building suggested another approach which I've started but the jury is still out.

You take the piece and give it a good liberal coat of plain unmedicated talcum powder and let it sit for a day or so.

Then wash it off and literally rinse-repeat until the powder no longer sticks anywhere.

I'm 2 days into the process and there are a few places where it will no longer stick but some where it still sticks.

The places where it doesn't stick look good so far.

To follow up, no the talcum powder trick did not work. After a few days the icky sticky starts to break through. 🙁

What does show some promise however is that Pledge Floor Gloss that they were talking about in the other thread. I have it but I use it on woodwork not floors.

Just for giggles I tried it on a painted part and the sticky has not broken through for about 4 days.

Really smooths out the surface too.

Looks promising! 🙂

I had similar experiences with some enamel paints as a kid. Every once in a while, the stuff would simply never set.

My bottle says it's for wood floors. Not sure if it'll seal sticky stuff, but might be good enough. I am going to use it to seal 3D prints before painting. Almost like wood prep.

This is really annoying !

Just another follow up...

The Pledge floor gloss seems to work. No icky sticky after more than a week! 🙂

Try model railroading.  I swear it is 99%+ male, and white male at that.

They hit on my wife too, until they realize I am her husband and 6’3” and a relatively fit 230.
