Reverse Elephant Foot? (MK3S, PLA215/60C)

 the first two pictures show the problem

the last two pictures are just there to show the geometry of the part

Ive been printing these trays to put into one of my ikea drawers and the solid layers for the bottom of the trays seem to contract or something

has anyone seen something like this before / has an idea how to fix this?

the print is perfect otherwise and still works, but the part ends up a little weaker this way and i dont wanna manually correct for this shrinkage in fusion since that seems like too much of a workaround

just to summarize:

-this contraction happens on the layers which are printed solid ( it looks something like this  [solid,solid,30%grid,bridge,top,top] )

-i am using regular PLA at 215C nozzle and 60C Bed temps and the 0.2mm quality preset at 0.25mm layers :^) with everything stock on a MK3S

-the CAD Model has flat walls / the print preview doesnt show anything as well

RE: Reverse Elephant Foot? (MK3S, PLA215/60C)

This was discussed in a very lengthy thread previously. In short:

  • Try dialing speeds back 50% with the front knob mid-print. If this helps, you know slicer settings will help.
  • Slow down external perimeter speeds. I use 20-25mm/s for best quality.
  • Add a perimeter if you can. The closer the enclosed area walls match the outside the less difference you'll see on the external walls.
  • Do a Linear Advance calibration for your filament.
  • Calibrate your extrusion multiplier for each filament you're using. If your printer is over-extruding even a small amount, this will impact solid layers and walls. Any excess can't go down. It can go up and result in a rough top surface, or sideways, resulting in irregular external walls.
  • If these are parts you've designed, increase wall thickness slightly.

@bobstro

ill try 50% speed and 1-2 extra perimeters for now

am already using 20-25 for ext perimeters ( as i said stock settings for quality )

thanks for the reply ill update after the next print is done

@bobstro

i reprinted with as similar settings as possible on cura which "fixed" the issue

now im even more curious what is causing this

so at this point i can rule out:

-extrusion multiplier

-speed

-extra perimeter

-linear advance

cura sliced box on the left                               PrusaSlicer on the right ( again standard settings )

another interesting thing to observe is the surface finish difference at the same set speed

at this point i know how to make boxes that will work but not what caused the issue

Without knowing what settings you used, we can only guess. Cura uses different values for many of those settings.

I'm having the same problems since I upgraded from MK3 to MK3S, and can not resolve this issue.

@ufo

i think what u are describing in ur post is a little different

my printquality overall looks fine but its just this particular geometry combined with the default Prusa Slicer settings causing what i refer to as reverse elephant foot in this thread

check linearity and stuff if u detect waves a too tight belt usually doesnt change print quality but just stretches the belt in my experience

https://help.prusa3d.com/en/article/extruder-linearity-correction-calibration_2254

good luck with ur issue, u can try other slicers to check if its ur machine but this doesnt look like a slicer issue ( and not even like a machine issue I dont think these prints look that bad tbh :^) )

@officer-baitlyn

Hi, apart from the print quality, you can also see to what you are refering as reverse elephant foot in my prints.

Look at the top & bottom of the case I printed, the reverse elephant foot appears where the solid layers are.

I noticed this after I made the upgrade from MK3 to MK3S.

Regards.

are all of these solid? ( seems like a bit much )

if so then yeah that could pretty much be the same thing

have u tried slicing in cura? im just curious if that would have the same effect as with mine

@officer-baitlyn

Yes, those are solid layers.

I did not try to slice in Cura yet. Will do that and report back.

In latest prusa software the elephant food was changed(firmware or/and software).

Are you using the latest software, with latest firmware.

if you use the latest software with older firmware, that could be the problem.

The new firmware and software the settings for elephant foot is changed.

Hi,

OK, so I tried slicing with Cura and the result was a bit better, but the "reverse elephant foot" was still there, just a little less.

I also downgraded the firmware to 3.8.0, and used PrusaSlicer 2.1, results were still the same.

I then changed the firmware to 3.8.0 for MK3,... still the same.

I must've messed something up, when I upgraded the extruder to MK3S.

Here are som test objects:

Try to print with more perimeters.

The foot you see is this the same height as the first layers 5 or 6 layers?

Did you try different filament?

Lower or higher temperature?

@peter-m26

i tried different filament on different temps

also did 4 perimeters instead of 2 for one print

but all the prints on default PS settings looked the same ( as they should im using mainly dasfilament and prusament for consistency )

OK, I tried to print with 4 perimeters instead of 2 and the result is better, but the issue is still there.

The foot is always the same height as the first layers that build the bottom of the case, in this example, 4mm.

I tried different filaments & brands of PLA & PETG  and the results are the same. Also playing with temperature doesn't help.

Print a different stl cube to if problem is gone.

Try printing with first layer with more extrusion for the first layers, or wider extrusion.
