Printing threads

I'm printing tap handles for a beer cooler and threads are 3/8-16. Is there any way I can print these or do they have to be metric?

I’m pretty sure Fusion 360 will allow you to make threads in most standard metric and imperial diameters and thread pitches.

All depends on your modeling software. I only know for sure that Fusion can do it. But I would think most modeling software can create imperial threads.

Yes, I use Fusion 360. That’s not the issue. If I draw the part in inch then convert to metric it converts the threads to metric. How do I slice and print in standard or inch? Will the printer print in inch?

Off the top of my head, I can think of three approaches:

  • Design in Fusion 360 after switching to mm as default unit. You can still use imperial thread sizes.
  • Design in Fusion 360 in inches, then when Saving as mesh, set Unit type to Millimeter in the export dialog. Imperial threads should be converted properly.
  • Design in Fusion 360 in inches, save STL in inches, then load into Prusaslicer. Right click on the model and select "Convert from imperial units"

Well I was playing today and what I did was switch the drawing to standard inch and then I modeled the 3/8-16 threads. Then I switched the drawing back to metric. The threads are still called out as 3/8-16. So I’m assuming the printer will print them as such.
