Nozzle hitting print a certain height

I am experiencing an odd issue.

The printer is pretty well calibrated as far as I can see. First layers are very well adjusted, however for some reason I keep getting fails at a certain height of a print. As the printed object reaches approximately 3.6 cm the nozzle begins hitting the print. I have reproduced this error 4 times. I don't see any evident warping, but it could perhaps be a possibility.

I have tried cleaning the nozzle, recalibrating everything, adjusted screws, changed layer height, temperature and speed.
Currently printing the Nefertiti included on the SD to see if the error occurs on other prints, and it is simply a bad model I am having the errors with.

I will follow up with my own results, until the issue is fixed, but if you have any ideas please do not hesitate to post them

I don't understand your issue. You say "hiting the prints" like, how hard? Overhangs? Infill? Travels?

I can't think of anything to say without pictures, or a detailed explanation of what's causing the crash. (What's it doing when it happens)

Sorry that was not clear. The print goes as expected, but after a certain amount of time the nozzle begins touching the printed parts, i.e. scraping on them. this results in the nozzle pushes the prints of the heat bed.

This is not the best picture, but from after such a failure. The part was pushed from the heat bed and the print continued in thin air, making a nice big spaghetti-like mess.

Is that PLA or PETG?

That's a tall print, and the "feet" look susceptible to warping. I'm going to go on a limb and assume your issue is actually just the part coming off the print bed.

1. Post a picture of the first layer of a print.
2. What/how/when you been cleaning the print bed with?

What type of filament?
What is your temperatures?

It is PLA.
Is 3 cm tall? And yeah, the feet are stupidly flimsy things.

1. Here are from a first layer calibration print, it covered nearly the entire bed. Note it is quite uniform, the bend is from when I removed it, and the fluff to the left is simply dirt.

2. I clean with isopropyl alcohol before every print. Only been printing for 5 days, so no acetone used yet. If you are wondering whether the prints stick, they most certainly do - have to use some time getting some of them of the bed.

You might be on to something. This is new filament as I ran out of the silver that came with the printer. The one I have now is called 3DE Premium, bought it at a local store. Might be worth ordering and trying one of the generally agreed "good" filaments. I have tried from 205 to 215 c for the hot end and 50 to 60 c on the bed

Re: Nozzle hitting print a certain height

When using the Smooth PEI sheet, I had MUCH better adhesion using windex to clean it than isopropyl alcohol.

Your first layer is flawless. Good job. 😯

I print with cheap filaments, and I have to play the "hmm... that was unexpected" game ALL the time. First layer adhesion is *ALWAYS* terrible with cheap PLA. (at least my experience)

I have had good luck with.
Windex <-- This is my go-to, for the smooth PEI sheet.
Liquid 3D print adhesive/glue (it seroiusly feels like elmers glue... I need to try the clear) <-- This makes stuff stick even better... I'm looking at you cheap ABS.

Acetone/IPA never really helped me very much.

Really, why not use more high end filaments then? Does the price not match the quality / frustration-reduction?

The extra frustration isn't much once you learn to "plan" for it.

I honestly couldn't afford my Mk3. If I want a MMU I need to order it ASAP (when it opens on the store)
That's another huge buy I can't afford.

I can barely afford my super cheapfilament. (11$/kg)

I do plan on moving to higher quality filaments. (E-SUN PLA PRO) is so far my favorite filament for 90% of prints... though I have fallen in love with some engineering filament I have... stuff is PSYCHO hard! (and prints quite nice) (and not cheap)

Re: Nozzle hitting print a certain height

Ok so that filamets print temp is 190 - 210.

When you are printing with it do you see any buildup on the nozzle? If you do that build-up could come off on the print then on the next layer you nozzle could crash into it breaking lose your print. (Had that happen to me before when i had too high of a temp)

If this happens on all prints at the same exact height i would look for something mechanical.

Re: Nozzle hitting print a certain height

I put a silicone sock on my nozzle and no more sticky bits hitting the print plus i use 3D prima filament and good nown fillament

I did not see any build up, however there was a lot of the thin almost transparent plastic strings. I was thinking mechanical as well, but no.

I have seen a lot of people praising silicone socks but forgotten why Prusa decided not to include one. Was it something about failures with them on?

I thank you all for your advice, the culprit has now been found:
It was the filament! As soon as i put in another everything went smoothly. Very odd as the new filament I used was the same brand and from the same retailer. I have however talked to the very friendly owner, who is a very eager printer himself. I am now most welcome to come by with the bad filament, so we can give it a closer look.

If you have a set of calipers measure the diameter of both filaments. You may find the old filament is slightly wider causing you to over extrude with it and layer by layer you put out ever so slightly extra bit of plastic.

If you don't have a set of calipers then you should buy a set because its one of the most useful tools to have with a 3d printer.
