How much clearance between nesting objects?

I'm making a box about 15 x 8.5 cm x 3.5 cm high, with a lid that will extend about halfway down each of the box's sides when it is in place. All of the walls for the box and lid will be 2.5mm thick.

Does anyone have suggestions for a general rule of thumb for how much clearance to try using between the lid and box? I want it to be fair snug, but not so tight that the lid is difficult to remove.

I may end up printing in PLA or PETG. Would the answer be different between these? I'll probably set a fairly high quality level in PrusaSlicer.

My rule of thumb is, 0.1 is very tight, 0.4 is a loose fit, so what you're looking for is somewhere in between.

My rule of thumb is, experiment. the more you experiment the more experience you'll gain, the more experience you gain the less you'll have to experiment.

Yes different materials PLA, PETG, TPU, ABS etc, will have different answers.

I've been at this for years now, on several different kinds of printer, and I've got to a point that I can usually get a new product or material dialed within 3 iterations, if its a particularly tough part or new material I may fall forward to 5 or 6 iterations. If your completely new to the technology and/or material you might find yourself at 15 iterations but don't let that discourage you, it takes time to learn these things, and it's worth taking the time to learn them.

Start with Fuchsr's suggestions and more forward or backwards from there.

Good luck
