Gaps between perimeters at start and end

Hello everyone,

I am having issues with the perimeters of my print not being connected at the start and end of the print. I have tried several speeds and temperatures but that doesn't fix the issue.  I have a single wall connecting to another wall at 90 degrees. The G-code viewer seems like it should make a well-connected wall, but it doesn't do so in the actual print. Does anyone have any ideas of how I could attempt to fix this?

This appears to be a type of compliance device, you may want to try simply using the Original perimeter generator, then go to Print settings/Advanced/ Extrusion width and change external perimeters to 0.38, perimeters to 0.4, and first layer to 0.38 you could then leave your retractions at their default and should see a good result. Turn off elephant foot compensation, or set it to 0.05. Turn off infill before perimeters, get rid of the perimeter speed modifier, turn off brim, set your skirt height to one and minimum filament extrustion length to 2, make sure your bed is clean, and that should work wonderful for you.

There's lots of possible causes.  Hardware, slicer configuration etc.  Pleased attach a zipped up copy of your prusa slicer project, File>Save Project As.  A PS project is a snapshot of your slice so contains the model and all the settings you are using.  It allows anyone to slice and review the previews, generate the gcode and print etc.  Also means you don't have to play 20 questions about settings 🙂

Without seeing the project though the first thing Id try is switching back to classic slicing engine instead of arachne and try a print.  I recall seeing a GitHub issue raised similar to this.

Any reason those slightly bent connectors from the core to the outside of the model need to be so thin? They won't slice in Classic without Detect thin walls. There's probably ways to adjust extrusion width etc to make it print properly but if you have control over the design and can make those connectors at least two walls wide (like the connectors to the smaller sides of the object) I suspect it'll print fine while being more robust.

Formerly known on this forum as @fuchsr -- until all hell broke loose with the forum software...

The one wall design is so thin for a reason. The design change would be my last resort. You are correct in your assessment though. I tried it and with two walls it is better. But then it looses its function.

I've printed this off 3 times now with various settings in PS.  None of them filled in those gaps.  Arachne just doesn't overlap those areas.  Classic doesn't like the thin perimeters and without doing something like a xy compensation to make the part 'thicker' it doesn't like it either.  and of course that changes your part size which you already said you don't want.

I had to use Super Slicer to print it.  Arachne in SuSi works just like it does in PS so the slice looked the same in those areas, but classic has more options for configuring overlaps.  With thin walls set on, overlapping external perimeters of 25% and a bit for all perimeters overlap of 10% and Merging thin walls with perimeters I could get it to print ok.  I could have upped the perimeter overlap more too to tweak it further if needed.  Basically there are a lot more options to play around with in SuSi.

Thank you so much! I got a decent result by disabling retraction completely, but as you can imagine that just makes it a mess in other aspects. 

I will try slicing with the other slicer. Hopefully, they add options for external parameter overlap at the start/end in the future in PS .

Lmk if you want a copy of my SuSi project.  It was done in version 2.5.59.  While SuSi is similar to PS as its based on it there are quite a few differences in the way its configured.  Its similarity can be misleading.

In the end, I got a good result in the Prusa slicer using your settings! The single thin walls are printed slightly thicker (0.5mm instead of 0.4mm) but still in one layer (which was the requirement). The classic slicer changes the pathways of the walls in a way to combine them with the outer wall, but I had to leave "detect thin walls" off.
