Filament gets stuck

Dear Community,

Initially all my prints were ok. However, now during prints after some random time the filament gets stuck in the extruder. When I unload the filament then its tip shows a small blob that seems to be blocking. See picture below.

I have changed the tension of the extruder, heated the hotend for a few min to 270 degrees to possibly free the extruder from debris, cleared the gears. However, the problem persists.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

That small blob is OK. Problems can arise when the length of this blob is greater than the diameter of the filament.
Is the temperature of the extruder stable or is it falling when the problem occurs? Does the extruder motor rotate, stop or clicking when the filament gets stuck?
Do you have any pictures showing extruder idler (locked) and the Bondtech gears?

Dear RHDreambox,

Thanks for your reply. Indeed the blob exceeds the diameter of the filament. I am unsure whether it is cause or consequence of the stuck.

I cannot recognize temp fluctuations. The extruder seems to get clicking or cracking beforehand. But these sounds are not there from the beginning. They preceed the „get stuck“ problem.

Regrading the pictures I will make some.

Best wishes
Ehler

Hi Ehler,

what layer height are you printing at?

what filament are you using?

does this happen when there are lots of retractions?

could you try the same print with retractions set to a smaller value?

Joan

Re: Filament gets stuck

Have your problems just been with the filament in your picture? I had troubles with Red which i thought was a blockage but it turned out the filament sensor didn't like it. Turned the sensor off and everything is perfect

Re: Filament gets stuck

Thanks for all your comments and replies. Today I have cleaned the filament sensor (was some dust on it), also tightened the idler stronger than before, I am assuming that it was too weak maybe. Now it seems to work better. I still need to do tests with larger prints.
