Angled supports not from build plate. Possible?

I have a tall model that only needs supports at the very top to support a 90 degree extrusion (lip).

I cannot print it upside down because I would need even more supports on the other end.

Obviously, I can add supports that extend all the way from the build plate to the lip, but if I could start the support material higher up, I would use less support material.

Is this possible?

Check the Tree supports on Cura.

I think PrusaSlicer has it, but only for the SL1.

Reading comprehension was never my strong suit though. Tree supports still start from the build plate...

Yes, they seem to originate from the build plate. Interesting nonetheless. Thanks for pointing me to that.

Is this something you designed? You could design in some sacrificial support a single -extrusion wide that can easily be cut away or snapped off.

Hi Michel, did you ever figure this out? I am experiencing the same problem, except I have designed a ledge inside a box. Perhaps I will attempt to design a sacrificial feature as bobstro has suggested... It seems to me there should be an option in the PrusaSlicer software where you just choose points to connect support material.

Attach your 3MF project file

Is the part a cylinder with a lip at the top, or square? That will impact what sort of supports will work. Save your current  3MF project file, zip it up, and attach it to a reply here so we can see your part & settings and give better recommendations.

My Model

Ok hopefully my attachments work. I'm trying to show the ledge (it's a square box) as it is in the 3mf file. I'm also attaching a screenshot of my current solution (strategic ribs designed into the part). Thank you for your feedback!

snap-off support that you add to your model

Totally do-able.  Add the support you want to your model pre-slicing.  For instance, model a thin rectangle that is the right size for that 45 degree gap you wish you could bridge with support.  Make it barely touch both surfaces that it is supporting in your model, and do not merge the parts.

When you import such a "support modeled in" (or sacrificial support) into prusa slicer it will prompt you about is it one multi-part piece or not - answer yes to that question or all of your "not quite touching" stuff will fall down to the bed in Prusa Slicer.  By telling PS that your multi-part model is all one part, it will slice all of the bits in their relative positions - so when that 45 degree sacrificial support comes time to extrude - it will.

RE: snap-off support

I will have to try that! I printed a test piece with a sacrificial support (two layers) and found it too difficult to break off cleanly. I didn't think about modeling something not merged...thank you.
