3D Maps
I have a 3D skin (mountain and surrounding countryside) in the form of an STL, but it is thin, so PrusaSlicer leaves a lot of holes even with supports throughout. It should be possible to import this into a program and fill out the underside, perhaps by placing it on a block and merging, but I have tried this in various ways in TinkerCad with no success. There is a useful article here ( https://blog.prusa3d.com/how-to-print-maps-terrains-and-landscapes-on-a-3d-printer_29117/) but the Terrain2STL only produces a very clunky terrain. I now have something akin to a foil that could have been pressed onto a 3D map and I need to buttress it and print it without all the holes. Does anyone have any ideas?
RE: 3D Maps
Most CAD's have the facility to extrude a face, you might get something there, one of the few cases where an STL is no less useful than a CAD format file, still gonna be a shitton of triangles tho. Also make sure Detect thin walls is off.
RE: 3D Maps
If you manage to get the terrain height coded in shades of grey in an image you could use a lithopane maker like https://3dp.rocks/lithophane/ to get a printable .stl...
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.
Find out why this is pinned in the general section!
RE: 3D Maps
Thanks guys
I was hoping I'd missed something that someone else thought was obvious, but apparently not so.

RE: 3D Maps
I had a similar problem with an .obj file where the triangles had no dimension. After a lot of experimenting with Blender I was able to add "thickness" to them and were able to print it. Unfortunately I can't remember what exactly I did in Blender, but it might be worth a try for your issue.
The most important thing I remember from my sometimes frustrating experience is though that you have to make sure that your whole model has the normals pointing towards the same side. Otherwise some polygons will be extruded in one direction and some in the other. Might look interesting though 🙂

I've no better suggestions, so worth a try!
