Y Axis gets stuck every couple inches - Original Prusa i3 MK3S+

When i manually move my Y axis while the printer is Off, it goes smooth for 2 inches, gets stuck, goes smooth for 2 inches, gets stuck until it reaches the end, both directions.

I've tried a few things, i've loosened the pulley, it is smooth all the way when the pull is loose, but as soon as i tighten it, it does the stuttering.
I've loosened the bolts holding the rods in and tried aligning them more, but i always get the same result.
Even tried adding more grease to the rods.

Might be time to disassemble the Y axis, and wash the bearings out, re grease then, then try them one at  a time on the smooth rods, One may be on it's way out!

Check the Y axis pulley and especially the idler pulley - if there is a fragment of debris caught in there it could cause that sort of error.

If that's OK, then loosen the belt and check the idler turns ok (fingertip pressure) and that the stepper motor turns without grating - you will feel the steps but otherwise it should be smooth.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheerio,

I've had the same issue and it was because the pulley on the y-axis motor was pushed too far in and was rubbing

Take the belt off a pulley (or detach the pulley from the end) and see how it slides without the motor in play.  if its smooth sliding all the way each direction and your perception of the pressure required to move does not change across the full length then you know its not bearings or the rods.  Re-attach whatever you took off and try again.

Belt binding or that position of the gear against the motor seems most the most likely culprit.
