WTF is wrong with my MK3?

After working fine for many months, all of a sudden I am unable to navigate the display. I have reloaded the F/W (3.8.1-2869), but it made no difference. I press the knob, the display blanks, makes two rapid clicks, and returns to the same home display, over and over and over. Somebody PLEASE solve this quickly.  My ability to make face shields for health care workers has been severely impacted. HELP!

Have you checked your ribbon cable for damage?  It looks to me like a bad encoder button......but I'm no expert.  Maybe try a long button press to see if it works properly?

EDIT: here is your link - no need to keep trying 😀

Long press only brings up the Z axis movement. Then I can't exit from that, keeps returning to that option and I have to reboot. No visible problems with any cables. The F/W is recognizing that the button has been pushed. (I don't know if it is making a circuit or breaking one), it just doesn't change state.

Any possibility you've got some dust or link in the assembly, or that the button has shifted? You might pop the front panel apart and take a look, and give it a good dusting. While there, you can check cable connections and look for damage.

Worst case, if you can get Octoprint running, you can print without the front panel provided you don't need to change nozzles or other settings. I did this when my display died recently.

Replacements boards can be ordered from PrintedSolid in the US if needed.

the encoder isn't simply acting like a switch......its sending "up" and "down" directions when turned similar to a stepper motor.  Sounds like something is either sending the wrong data or reading the wrong data during a button push......or adding extra pushes.  Hard to troubleshoot by itself.

If it were me, I would plug in a pi or laptop with octoprint.....and see how far I could get.  I don't know enough about the firmware yet....but I would guess the thing could run without a front panel as long as it had pronterface or octoprint.  I would highly doubt the Einsy is causing it.......which leaves the cable, encoder, and board.

As noted before, the press of the knob IS being recognized, as evidenced by the display blanking and the two rapid clicks, it's just not changing to the next menu. I would suspect a F/W issue, but my 2nd MK3 (running the same F/W) is not having the same problem. I will try some "contact cleaner" on the encoder/housing and see what happens.

It seems to be registering at least two clicks if it entering then exiting the menu.....but you can also see if you can get it to perform a full factory reset.  That would eliminate firmware issues if you reflashed after a full reset.

OK, while holding my breath, flooding the encoder/switch assembly with contact cleaner (used to be carbon tetrachloride but may be a different formulation now, although it smells the same) while exercising both the switch and the rotary motions has, at least temporarily fixed the problem. This "fix" should probably go in an archive or FAQ somewhere. I'll keep an eye on it and report the MTBF if it happens again. Do I remember reading somewhere they have had issues with the encoder and started substituting a different part for it? Was this one of the issues?

That problem was with the Mini and was resolved by either changing vendors or going to a encoder similar to the MK3S.

If its the only machine you have, and vital to anything, I would just use bobstro's post and look at keeping a spare LCD on hand.

Based on my (qualified) success as discussed in my posting below, I'm thinking there's nothing wrong with the board per se, only the encoder component. If the Mini's encoder was experiencing issues (I don't think we were ever told exactly what they were) and the MK3 encoder is now being put in the Minis, I expect we will eventually be seeing similar failures in them. The encoder itself is not a sealed unit, so who knows what substance (oils/cigarette smoke/etc.) can creep into their innards and foul up the mechanical contacts of the switch portion. Hopefully, the encoder portion operates optically. Still, I wonder if a careful external application of a sealant material (glue/caulk/Bondic/etc.) over the housing cracks and crevices might be prudent?

Prusa, PLEASE increase the time allowed to edit a post! It seems like it's only about 30 seconds, ridiculous!

Reddeawg,

Based on my machine....  I have had mine running for 110 DAYS over the last 11+ months.  Yes that's days of operation (24x7).  I have done minor maintenance on it and no I do not use Octoprint so the hour meter is as accurate as I can get it.  I have not messed with a perfectly working machine other than normal maintenance.  My machine has been in the Prusa LACK enclosure for most of it's life and I have flashed the firmware.  As per Bobstro, I just updated the firmware to 1.9.0 RC.  I slice with Slicer PE (Prusa Slicer) and others as necessary.  I have seen a noticeable build up of off gas materials from PLA when I use it, (not too often because I use PETG mostly), on the plexiglass of the enclosure, (which contains the control panel, I have not mounted it outside the enclosure).

All that said, I have not had any encoder problems.  As others have said it was a BAD batch of encoders specifically for the Mini and those were replaced by Prusa.  I believe that sealing the encoder will invite problems.  Mounting it outside your enclosure (as long as you don't add to the air pollution by smoking), will cut down on the off gassing of filament.  But that's about all there should be in issues.  A little house cleaning with some form of electronics cleaner (now non-freon based hydro carbons), should be all you need.  That and using them more often to keep them clean.  😉
