Traverse to 0,0 then nothing
THis is my first post. Be gentle. I have searched for this problem, but cannot find any hits. Maybe I am using the wrong words.
I built my Mk3 in November. It am an engineer and it was fairly straightforward, made one cable routing mistake that was corrected. Benchy in PLA was my first test and it was nearly perfect. I started to try some other stuff, including my own designs, and had printed about 10 things when one just went crazy. Here are the symptoms:
1. I get the gcode to the machine on the SD card.
2. I start the print. It goes through the table - z 9 point sequence.
3. It goes to 0,0 (or beyond, this is a question) and stops, mechanically.
4. The screens shows it blasting through the SD about 10x faster than if it was printing (percentages changing). There is no extrusion or other mechanical action.
5. It finishes like it was done.
6. There are no errors.
I tried several things, like re-slicing. Changed resolution, anything to try to kick some change. All acted the same way for this part (same STL) file. I tried another STL file. Same thing. Then I tried an already existing file gcode on the SD (the Batman logo), and it was perfect. That means the printer is fine, and we have a software problem.
So I changed software, and went to Slicer PRusa edition (I was using the “simpler” included one before that). That worked! I have been running stuff since then. I have probably done less than 30 items so far, all smallish. I went to PETG a couple weeks ago. Everything was good.
Until yesterday. Now I am getting the exact same symptoms. It just goes to that front left corner and hangs, and it looks like it is zipping through the gcode doing nothing.
I am seeking some sort of assistance in how to diagnose and correct this issue. In all cases, it has started as part of an iteration on a design, where I am making the 3rd or so minor change and making new gcode. I thought it was the slicer software, because it went away went I switched, but now I get the exact same behavior on different software, different part.
Any help appreciated.

If Slic3r creates an incorrect code, you should receive a message about this when you start printing.
Try installing the printer's firmware again, it might be something wrong when it was last updated.

Hello Jack, if you try to print one of the original Prusa g-codes on the SD card, it still works, right? I would think that rules out pretty much everything on the printer, both firmware and hardware. If so, the first thing I would check is Slic3r PE's "Printer Settings", that it is set to the factory default "Original Prusa i3 MK3". Having some other setting might generate g-code that the MK3 cannot digest.

Thanks for all responses. I got it working again, though I am not totally comfortable. What I did was
1. Update the firmware to 3.5.1.
2. Update Slic3r PRusa Edition (1.42+ I think).
3. Re-generated gcode from same STL.
The above involved rebooting my pc to get the USB to work (my first firmware update), power-cycling the printer itself (though I had done that previously).
I have since done two more prints and things seem to be working as well as ever.
I did not reset to factory; figured I would try the smaller hammers first. I did not recalibrate; is that needed after a firmware update? The manual is not clear on that.
This is a windows 7 pro environment, for reference.

the general configuration should be saved over a firmware update. so you should be ok....
what does the first layer look like?

Good choice a factory reset is something of a last try move when other things are not working in my case a panda that was intermittent had caused the printer to do random layer shifts... and bothe replacing the pinda and then a factory reset data wipe was required for the full fix.
