Third party heater not accepted?
I read on another thread that the E3D 24V heater cartridge should have a resistance between 13-15ohm. I got a third party heater that's 24V but the resistance is only 10.4ohm. The MK3S+ refuses to PID tune it (stuck on 0/5) and throws thermal error if I try to do a thermal model calibration.
Is voltage not the only thing that matters? I thought the PID tune was supposed to determine what power output to give to maintain a certain temperature? So there's no choice but to use only E3D's heater cartridge? The third party heater has tons of sales and positive reviews of it working on other printers, so it shouldn't be out-of-spec for a 'normal' 24V heater.

Which firmware version uses your printer ?. If it’s the latest 3.12 with the new thermal model, maybe 55 watts are considered too much. Revo hotends have currently problems with this firmware possibly for similar reasons. I wonder if heaters of just 50 watt are also ‘outlawed’ by the new thermal model.

24V is not then only thing that matters. It is half the problem. The resistance of the heater is the other part of the problem. With 15 ohms the current draw is only 1.6 amps. with 1.4 ohms and 24V the current draw ia 2.3 amps. That is almost 50% more current than the E3D heater draws. That means that the third party heater is going to get very much hotter than the E3D. Since the 24V is fixed there is no way to reduce the current in the heater. I don't believe that there is a current limiter in the circuit either.

I did some calculations and the third party heater is about 55W, which isn't abnormally high as there are many 24V 50W heaters out there. And they seem to work fine with other printers with PID tuning. Does this mean the MK3S+ will only take 24V 40W heaters and nothing else?

Yup, this was the problem. Even though mine isn't the Revo. The new thermal model basically prevents the printer from using anything but a 24V 40W heater. Had to do a flashback to 3.11. Thanks
