Should there be a need to calibrate x/y steps?

Hi, I’ve had my MK3 since earlier this year and for several months haven’t bothered updating the firmware because it was generally printing satisfactory and I didn’t want to upset it.

I did just update to latest firmware mainly for linear advance. I’ve calibrated extruder steps, first layer, single wall multiplier, linear advance etc. but I do find some slight dimensional inaccuracies on the x / y axis of the print. Should I calibrate that too?

Main reason I ask is to understand what others are doing and if indeed these shouldn’t be touched (indicating instead some physical issue with the build). Just wanting to get it really dialed in.

Thanks

Re: Should there be a need to calibrate x/y steps?

unless something in the drive chain is changed there should not be any need to change these settings.

changing items in the drive chain will affect other settings too...

so for example if you used 0.9 degree motors to try and improve definition,
you would affect the number of steps per millimeter, and the end stop sensing and crash detection to name a few parameters ...

you need to be prepared to make a number of changes if you step outside the original design

I have the same problem. When I print a 150mm x 150mm box, it comes out 150mm x 152mm. This is not acceptable. Can I fix it within the current system, or do I need to dive into the firmware?
