Shifted layers
I just changed to a volcano hotend, and after some small issues, I was getting good results. However, I have started having a consistent error. When printing a 3dhubs Marvin at 300% scale, Every time, at 20mm up, i get a shifted layer to the left. I have resliced, increased retraction, and watched the print. Nothing catches, but the printer shifts to the left at the same spot in the same way every time, no matter what i do, 9 times in a row.

And where do you get the idea retraction has anything at all to do with layer shifts? Pulling filament back up the extruder 0.3mm doesn't move or jam the print head.
Most likely there is something jamming the print head motion when it gets to that 20 mm height. Have you checked your belts, pulleys, and stray cable layout? Last person who complained about retractions causing shifts found something had fallen under the printer and was jamming the bed motion.

For clarity: here are a couple definitions.
Retraction - A slicer program setting. This setting is used to pull the filament slightly back into the print head during times when the head is traveling from one print point on an object to another. This stops the filament from leaking out of the print nozzle and leaving strings of material across otherwise empty space. If your CAD design has a discontinuous surface, you slicer program should automatically enable the retraction setting. See also Slicer.
Z-Lift - A slicer program setting. This setting is used to lift the Extruder vertically along with a filament retraction.
Anyway - a retraction, by itself, won't cause layer shifts. If lift is set to zero, or not being triggered during layer changes, may have an effect.
