sensor and board version compatability

Hi

I have built a MK3S system (I think it was using MK3 to MK3S upgrade kit) that I bought in New Zealand

(along with an mmu2s but I haven't installed that part yet, thought it was safer to learn with out it perhaps)

I believe my main board is a rambo 1.1a

Going through the startup config its complaining about a filament sensor error - my filament version number is 0.1b

Questions

  1. is a rambo 1.1a normal for a MK3S?
  2. is filament sensor 0.1b compatible with my rambo 1.1a?
  3. And is there a specific firmware I should be using?

Thanks a bunch

- Ding

RE: sensor and board version compatability

following up on this - ive just gotten from settings

  • main board hardware:   rambo 1.1a
  • main board firmware:  3.5.1-1778

also not sure what these mean but:

  • 1_75mm_MK3
  • EINSy_10a
  • E3Dv6full
  • date:  Dec 19 2018
  • MMU2 - NA

I think my printed parts are for MK3S + bear upgraded frame kit

So I think my questions are:

  • Should I be trying to upgrade my firmware
  • will this filament sensor work with my version?

ok, I got impatient and upgraded my firmware - hopefully this is OK

  • main board hardware:   rambo 1.1a
  • main board firmware:  3.11.0-4955

also not sure what these mean but:

  • 1_75mm_MK3
  • EINSy_10a
  • E3Dv6full
  • date:  Dec 19 2018
  • MMU2 - NA

I think my printed parts are for MK3S with bear upgraded frame kit

So I think my questions are:

  • will this filament sensor (0.1b)  work with my firmware ?
  • and going through the config wizard now it says:   Calibration Failed! Check the axes and run again.
  • (it didnt used to fail on that step with the old firmeare)

RE: sensor and board version compatability

Mini Rambo was used on Mk1, Mk2 and Mk2.5 series printers, and required a 3wire Pinda.

Einsy Rambo, is used on Mk3 series printers, initially this used a 4wire Pinda (Including thermistor for temperature management)
the Mk3 printer had a Laser filament sensor, (4 wire)
the Mk3s and later versions have an Infrared filament sensor (3 Wire) initially this was Black PCB

Late Mk3S's began to get RED PCB Filament Sensors,   I believe the red filament sensor has modified circuitry to help the Prusa Printer controller ( Einsy Rambo) recognise the presence of a filament sensor, when there is no filament present.
I believe all Mk3S+ printers have red filament sensors.

Supa Pinda was introduced with the Mk3S+ and is again a 3 wire pinda probe (No thermistor)

I hope this helps.

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

Good to see the evolution.

I believe this black (3 wire) one you mentioned in the middle is the version I have (v0.1b)

and from what i'm reading it "should" work with my mk3s version

Now that ive upgraded the firmware its not getting to the filament test though I think, its now getting an error in the xyz calibration

Not sure if its the cause but is there a way to make paper lay flat on the bed? mine curls a tiny bit so has small humps - or maybe there is something else wrong in the setup... it stops and complains when the extruder gets close to the bed

RE:

Is your Bear kit for just the frame, or do you also have the Bear X-axis and extruder?  The Bear frame can work with either the stock Prusa X-axis and extruder, or with the "Bear Exxa" X-axis and extruder which is a separate modification designed by the same guy.  Which one you have will determine your firmware needs.  If you try to use factory Prusa firmware with the Bear Exxa, you will not pass calibration.

The extruder is stock MK3S
Some parts on the axis are upgraded like pully mechanisms etc are upgraded as stock wont fit the bear frame I guess?

Seems to pass calibration now with the firmware upgraded - I got passed the previous calibration issue by doing a z calibration first - one of my z tops wasnt tight enough so the x wasnt level.
Message now says:   XYZ Calibration OK. X/Y axes are perpendicular  🎉

But now need to go back and see if the filament is working better with the new firmware

Stock extruder and X-axis doesn't care if it is on stock frame or bear frame; and the Bear Exxa works fine on the stock frame as well (although it needs the Bear calibration firmware to pass cal on either frame).  There's a lot of mixing and matching of parts possible though as users have remixed various parts in order to put some of the Bear style features (better belt tension adjustment, etc) on the stock X axis.

Either way if you got it to pass cal then you've obviously got the right firmware for your configuration.
