SD Card won't load unless i cold reboot with the Card In

SD Card won't read when inserted.

I'm not sure if it's 3.7.0 firmware issue, but SD Card will not show up when I insert it while the printer is on.  If i turn the printer OFF and ON it'll display the contents of the SD Card.

Resetting does not work.

When I insert the SD Card while the printer is on, the LCD does seem to show that it saw the card, but what i see is .. and <Back.  with no contents.

Anyone else seeing this?

Does it happen with multiple SD cards?  Or is it just one bad card?

I have exactly the same problem. Latest Firmware. About 2 weeks old. When you insert a card, it reads nothing on it.

A cold reboot brings up the card.

Anything further as fixes?

SD Card slot is known to be flaky if abused. Do not slam and bury the card into the reader, insert it carefully and don't apply up or down pressure as you slip it in.  There is a Thingyverse fix for those that have bent the SD card slot metal work.  Bent metal work lets the card go in too far.

Thanks Tim,

The card slot has never been abused, and only used maybe a dozen times.

Structurally it looks like new, do deformation or distortions in the casing.

If the machine is booted with the card, it sees it and can reliably print from it. If the card is removed, the menu does not say"No SD Card", it still has print from SD card as the option.

When the machine is booted without a card, it reads "No SD card" and then a card is inserted, it stills reads "No SD Card".

So I think it the SD Card sensor.

How would I go about troubleshooting this?

Problem Solved!

When I looked inside the card reader, the pin closest to the SD marking was displaced laterally. I just nudged it with a needle and it popped back into place.

It now works as it did when new.

Thank you for the update.

Maybe others will have a similar issue.

Some folk have suggested pulling the card out a bit helps with connectivity when the card has been inserted too far.   The Thingiverse fix works by keeping the vertical pressure on the fingers (apparently the metal bends internally and allows the card to be pushed in too far).

RE: SD Card won't load unless i cold reboot with the Card In

This SD card not reading issue has been the bane of my existence over the past few months.

I tried all the fixes I found discussed on the forum.

First the basic stuff on the official prusa troubleshooting page for this error.

Then, carefully holding / not over-inserting the card.

Then, rebooting with the card in.

Then, flashing updated firmware.

Then, made sure there were no files on the card that had any gcode errors

Then erasing and reformatting the SD card.

etc, etc...Nothing worked!! #&$%@!!

Then my friend gave me a new board that he hadn't used, and that worked .... for about a month!

and then the same thing happens! One minute it's working fine, and literally the next minute on a new print it's back to the "No SD Card" error again....

And here I am now, very frustrated that I'm getting this dumb error with almost new (non-abused!) board and I'm back searching for fixes while swearing under my breath.

Then I see the thingaverse shim fix mentioned above. I was not expecting it to work, but what else could I do? So I print it out and install it...and it works perfect!!

So if you're having any of these SD card issues, give this a go early in your problem diagnosis process, it might save you some frustration.

Feedback for Prusa Team (if you read these posts)

- fix your controller board case so it properly supports the card reader case

- provide better error messages

- update your official trouble shooting page for this error (it's tough digging through the forums and trying out the various fixes people are posting)

Just a note:

If you use Octaprint - you will never use the SD card again.

Yeah, I had a look at Octaprint. I'm sure it's very powerful, but I found it quite difficult to use. (that said I didn't read any instructions!)

Main reason for not exploring Octa more seriously is I don't want to have my computer connected (and running) all the time.

get a raspberry pi 3b and run octopi ( octoprint for pi ) on it ,

access the pi via network or wifi to start or monitor the printer

print a pi case for the prusa ( see thingiverse - there are lots of options)

a 1ft USB A-B cable and the standard pi power supply are all you you need

and a micro SD card

I haven't used the SD cards on either of my printers in months

For the record: I had the same issue with the memory card would only read upon boot, and would not detect if it was inserted or removed. For me this was caused by the pin in the picture being stuck in the upper position (it would not move back down when the card was removed):

Similar issue. Worked for over 2 years perfectly until today. I've looked at the 'fixes' and tried some. When I insert the SD card there is a click and I get the row of circles and it reports MAIN and nothing else. Tried several SD cards all with same result. It did read 1 file but ignored the one I need to print. appears that it knows the card is there but cannot find the file (the file is clearly there and can be read in Win 10).

Is it time to order a replacement LCD assembly?

Any ideas welcome. I have a CNC router project pending that needs a couple small parts printed to proceed.

Thanks,

John in Texas

My Prusa that I bought new does this and I just thought it had something to do with the model I have.  My used prusa has issues with reading the card if I push it in all the way but I don't have to reboot to get it to read the card.  I guess I'll try opening my new one to see if any of the solutions posted work.
