Question: What advantage is having a few extra build plates?

I just bought an MK3 I3. I see there are a lot of build plates from aftermarket sellers.

Do you own extra build plates?

What brand?

Why?

Re: Question: What advantage is having a few extra build plates?

some folk believe different build plate surfaces provide better adhesion for different materials.

if you are doing lots of prints having multiple build plates of the same type to allow you to take one plate off, when your print run finishes, put it on one side to cool, and start the next run immediately

if you have a spare pate you can continue printing whilst you replace the surface on another...

or if you're like me, I have three plates because I have three printers... 😀

I try to make safe suggestions,You should understand the context and ensure you are happy that they are safe before attempting to apply my suggestions, what you do, is YOUR responsibility. Location Halifax UK

I've got 2 double-sided PEI sticker sheets. One side got torn up, so it's relegated to printing sticky materials with glue stick. When printing at hotter temperatures, it is nice to keep the flow going with a 2nd as the 1st cools. A different surface texture would be another reason.

Thanks. I bought one to put buildtak on one side and PEI on the other. I bought a powder coated and will buy a PEI Prusa Plate if offered as an option.

Keep in mind, build plates from different manufacturers may have different thicknesses, so your live z may change as you change plates.

Proud owner of a Mk3 that is producing very nice prints. There is room for improvement as I learn more about it, but so far I am very happy.

Re: Question: What advantage is having a few extra build plates?

I am printing Nylon fairly often and also Polypropylen filaments, which doesn't really stick to anything except polypropylen itself.

So I have the original smooth PEI coated Prusa build plate, where I removed one PEI and added a GFK FR4 plate with 3M adhesion transfer tape to be able to print nylon without gluestick, plus PET also sticks to FR4 quite nice.

I have another Buildtak flexplate, where one side I have a Filaprint bed surface, which is good for amost everything except Nylon and PP. And on the other side I have a 0.65 mm thick Polypropylen sheet, on which I print all my PP filemantes.
