Quality is rough towards rear of print

Hi everyone!

We're the owners of a new MK3S+ and it's been amazing. Night and day difference between this printer and the other 4 we've owned. However, we do have one issue we're trying to solve. We're printing some large round gears and there is an issue with the print quality towards the rear in particular.

Pics kept failing to upload here so I've put them on imgur instead: https://imgur.com/a/d0S1DIk

Hoping it's something simple to address 🙂

Cheers

Have you tried rotating it, just to make sure it's not related to the model? Otherwise I would suspect a cooling issue even though this model looks like it should print okay.

There is a smaller matching gear for this which also exhibits the same issues. I'll try rotating the smaller one and see what happens!

Have you done a rigorous Z calibration using one of those 3x3 single-layer test prints?

Those will show any issues between front/rear and/or left/right and you can dial in corrections via the front panel if needed.

I'm not familiar with the 3x3 single-layer prints. I'll see if I can find that and give it a shot! Thanks

Here's what the 3 x 3 print looks like before me doing anything: https://imgur.com/a/nxlMv2L

Seems worse at the front as opposed to the rear. However we changed from satin sheet to smooth between me starting this thread and now. The only difference would be the z offsets saved for each sheet, I would think.

Okay so using the info from the above test I've done a bed level correction. I'm going to print the part again (rotated) and see how it goes!

It's almost always difficult to make an accurate assessment of things like this from photos over the net, but I think it's safe to say that you *DO* have some Z variation between the front and rear of your bed.

In particular, the lower image below shows one square that looks like it could need a bit more 'squish', but again it's often deceiving when looking at posted photos.

The procedure for doing the front/rear and left/right tweaking appears here: https://help.prusa3d.com/article/bed-level-correction_2267
