prusa MK3S+ keeps crashing

I've been experiencing some issues with my printer for some time.

I am seeing that the printer on a regular basis will keep crashing even on the slow printing of my outer perimeter.
I am seeing this crash about every layer at the same location and sometimes twice per layer.

Since I am having Issues I tried recalibrating the X and Y belts and the printer tells me everything is properly setup.

A video of what is happening:

My setup :

I am currently printing PETG @230 degrees and the bed @ 90 degrees
prusa MK3S+ printer with an MMU2S connected
also a raspberry PI zero W running octoprint is installed.
the slicer software is prusa slicer 2.3.0 linux 64 using default settings on quality

As mentioned I already tried tensioning the belts with no improvements at all.
I hope someone can help me with this issue?

After getting the details from the last crash menu it tells me this:

last print failures
power failures :1
filam. runouts : 0
crash x 1 Y 146

This data does not seem correct because I already counted around 50 crashes for this last print

have you lubed the linear bearings / rods?

Hi Joan,

My printer is around 1 month old and I have run it for around 40 to 50 hours now.

They look pretty well lubricated still.

Would you advice to lubricate them?

Regards,

Sebastiaan

Hello Sebastian. I had the same issue. My printer was in stealth mode so no crash detection. I started getting shifting layers and then one day the printer wouldn't even home. The x-axis was difficult to move by hand. I was ready to take it all apart to fix it. Turned out the linear bearings went dry. Search amazon for "Super Lube 51004 Synthetic Oil with PTFE, High Viscosity, 4 oz Bottle,Translucent white".  Put a drop on each rail, move the x and y axis by hand a couple times, wipe with towel. Do this a few times until the motion feels smooth. For the Z axis rails, put a drop on the rails just above the bearings and use the controls to move the z axis up and down.

I wrote a review of super lube with PTFE on my blog.  I am very happy with the results.  Quieter prints and fewer mystery crashes.  It is a little thinner than Prusa's grease.

@cwbullet

I tried to lube it with the lube provided with the printer with no success.

Then I was looking at your review.

Is only that brand ok ,or are other brands fine too?

As I live in eu they charge 182$ shipping cost at that link on amazon 🙂

I finally found the real culprit.

The Allen bolt had come loose just a bit.
Allowing for a strange movement on some of the angles of the perimeter.

Strange enough this did not show up in the diagnosis.

I tightened both Allen bolts, and the problem seems to have vanished.

Thanks for the help!

@sebastiaan

Thanks for the update.  That can also be the culprit.

hi!  I think I might be having the same issue you did.  Just curious which allen bolts you mean.  Thanks!

@sebastiaan, I'm having the same issues that you described in your original post.  Which Allen bolt did you tighten?

Thanks!

Not sure if the OP is still around as the original post is almost 2 years old.

I can’t say for sure which Allen screw(s) he tightened but my guess is to check the grub screws on the motor pulleys of both the X and Y axis. Insure the pulleys are properly aligned and not dragging against something and that the grub screws are properly tightened with one of them aligned with the flat on the motor shaft.

Cheers

Thanks Randy.  I read through this article and performed ALL of the recommended maintenance including: cleaning/greasing my rods, belt tensioning, and checking/tightening the grub screws on my motors.  I haven't printed anything yet ... so not sure if my issues are fixed.

Good place to start. If you did all that you should be fine.

If you still run into problems, come back here and let us know.

Happy Holidays!

Cheers

Op is still here but is on holiday. 😎

I can confirm I tightened both screws. As in the picture, and I secured them using locktide.

Hope this helps

I just wanted to add for those that come here for help with sudden crashes. I also was suddenly having a crash after moving my Prusa. Did the routine posted above and found the culprit. In my case some fine filament threads got around the back z pulley and was causing the crash. When all else fails, do maintenance, won't hurt.

Hi everyone -- wanted to chime in here in case it helps somebody.

I was having some similar issues on a newly assembled Kit printer (mostly X-axis crashes).  I went through this thread and tried a bunch of things including lubing bearings and tightening the allen bolts fastening the pulleys to the stepper motors, but none of it worked.

However, I went through and checked the allen bolts on all parts related to the axes, pulleys, and steppers, and discovered that some of them had become a bit loose.  Going through and retightening all of them fixed the issue and greatly reduced the number of crashes I was experiencing.

I didnt even need to disassemble the printer at all to do this*.  Just observed a print and whenever it crashed too many times to continue, I would look for more allen bolts to tighten, and then resume the print.  Did this a few times and then the problem was resolved.

Hope this helps someone!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

*Mind you I was using an iFixit Mako Precision Screwdriver which made it easier to reach some bolts... but I think all the bolts that I needed to tighten would have been reachable regardless.

RE:

UPDATE: this helped a bit but turned out not to be the main culprit.  Biggest offender was that my belts were WAY too tight and the extra strain on the motors was causing most of the crashes.  Tuning them using the belt tuner method described here seems to have actually resolved it.
