Massive layer shifting

Hey folks, I bought a Mk3 here a couple of weeks ago and got all assembled. had to fiddle with the tension on the x and the y axis a little bit, but once I got that all dialed in I've had several perfect prints.

The big problem I'm having now is I get sporadic layer shifting. it's not a tensioner thing, these shifts are huge. in every instance it appears that it shifts two or three times and then corrects itself. at first I thought it was my cat, but I had the door locked for a 28 hour print and checked on it 22 hours in and it had failed. I rotated the object for ease of viewing, but I rotated at 90 degrees for the picture. So it looks like the failure was on the y-axis. I checked the gcode every time and in the slicer looks good. it's not every print, I finished a 14-hour print yesterday that was flawless. Any thoughts?

I just stared at it more closely, and on further review it looks like, when it shifted, you ithifted on both the x and y axis.
