That is where a backup comes in handy.

My vote it ditch windows and go with Fedora 28.
Yes cura and slic3rPE, prusa control etc work in linux.
Good luck!

Exactly!

When windows me crashed on me killing all my files I converted to Debian for three years.

Then I got a Mac and never looked back. Since 13 years

Much of the data should be recoverable depending on if it's a corrupt OS file or a corrupted file system.
If you don't have access to another system and the data is important, consider trying a bootable liveCD Linux disc and see if it can mount the file system.

Regardless of what OS you choose to pursue, it would be wise to check the health of the system drive in case this was a symptom of failing storage media.

For future reference, the 9nly thing that would possibly kill Windows is a bad driver. If one gets installed and Windows won't boot you can enter recovery mode and load a Restore Point that Windows always saves before it installs drivers. No need to reload anything. If that doesn't work you may have just conveniently had a hardware failure during the installation.

No distro of Linux will save you from not having backups, or using a bargain bucket 5400rpm spinner to store critical data, faulty ram/psu, or even still using a 10-year old OS, all of which are likely scenarios for your laptop failing.

Installing slic3r didn't kill windows, sorry. Also, the earth is round and jetliners are not spraying chemicals into the air.

But climate change - that must be fake, right? Please?
