Help - PEI ripped, peeled from smooth sheet.

 I have had my printer for about a month now.

 I recently printed a large lithophane box.  It finished around 10:30 PM, and around 6ish AM I wen to pop it off the sheet.

Now the sheet and print was room temperature. I flexed the sheet to break the print loose, but when I lifted it off, I saw it had pulled some of the PEI off. It actually ripped and separated as you can see.

Now after a few prints on the other side, the lifted parts look to have mostly glued themselves back down, but that ripped area is still ripped.

1 - OMG I broke it!

2 - Any thoughts on why that happened?

3 - Is it going to be an issue?

What kind of filament?

I learned the hard way to always use a release agent with large flat ABS prints, and I always do as well with PETg and sometimes PLA, but usually PLA breaks free easily with no pulling of the coating.

I was using PLA, so I didn't use any release agent.

Nozzle was at 195C, bed was at 60C, so no odd temperatures during the print. Everything was at room temp when I removed it ~ 20.

I had the same thing happen to me on a PETG print.  That stuff sticks really well.  It was a small print too.  Brand new print bed.  Time to replace the PEI sheet.  Curious what kind of release agent jsw is using?

@jsw

What kind of release agent are you using?  Haven't heard of that before.

Thanks.

BTW, you can go a long time with a 1 sided PEI sheet - just be careful of those overly-sticky filaments.  I'd suggest you found one in PLA that will need a release agent.    By the way, if you are logged in on the prusa shop, you can find replacement PEI coating in the spare parts section.  I have a few on my shelf that I plan on using to fix up TWO smooth PEI sheets that I ruined before learning my lesson about release agents.

I use the Layerneer Bed Weld.  Amazon stocks it here in the States.  It works as both an adhesion booster and a release agent.  A little goes a long way.  I ordered a second bottle after I realized it was doing what I want, but I'm still on the first one.

I concur.  Good stuff.  I am not so sure this isn’t similar to hair spray.

On one of the other boards (Reprapper?) somebody said that this stuff may indeed be rebranded hair spray.  I've been meaning to do a sniff test against my wife's collection of hair products but have not gotten around to it.

@jsw

I could not do a sniff test with hair spray.

Makes me sneeze like nothing else 😀

Thankfully I have no hair to spray it on.

Tank you very much!

Printing PETG on an smooth PEI bed seems to work better (release), when you clean the cold bed with IP alcohol.

I do this every second/third print. So far it work quite good. This first side of my PEI sheet I ruined the same way. The second side is so far ok.
