Filament still inside Hotend but thermistor broken

Hi everyone, again.

I've finally found some free time between projects at work to disassemble my hotend and replace it in its entirety after I accidentally ripped the wires from the Thermistor at the end of January.  (I wanted to replace it entirely to learn and because I think I may've damaged something when trying to install and fix said install of the ZODIAC nozzle several times.) I've successfully disassembled the housing and removed the wires from the mobo but I can't seem to remove the actual hotend assembly from the extruder housing and I'm assuming it's because there is still filament through the length of it and ending at the gears.  Because there was a mintemp error right away, my inexperience with such an issue, and I'm guessing waiting so long, I can't just do a cold pull of the filament that remains.  I tried already and rapped my knuckles when my pliers lost grip on the filament.  I want to guess that I need to get a heat gun to try to warm up the filament to remove it before I can remove the assembly but I just wanted to check here as to what I should do if there is another way.  I really, really don't want to disassemble more than this but I will try to bite that bullet if I have no other choice.

Thanks,

Tanner

Tanner,

If you are just trying to remove the entire hotend assembly from the extruder you could certainly use a heatgun to warm the heater block and nozzle to remove the filament but it is probably easier to just release the tension on the Bondtech rollers by loosening the tension screw.  The filament will just drop right out then.

Please let me know if I misunderstood your question.

Regards,

Steve

Remove the hotend from the extruder: and dissasemble it. Eventually change the PTFE tube and the heatbreak (change to a titan variant). I would not work with the hot air gun on a mounted hotend because the plasticparts near the hotend could melt.

@steve_g

The filament won't budge.  Even before I snipped it to just under the gear (when I was still attached to the spool), I tried to lift but it is stuck in the entire assembly without heading it up.

@karl-herbert

I have a whole new hotend - heatsink, heatbreak, and heat block - plus the additional parts like the PTFE tube.  I will look into the suggested heatbreak, I'm assuming it is this? e3d v6 Titanium Heat Break As for the heatgun, I just wanted to warm up the metal parts enough to help loosen the stuck PLA filament, not melt the PETG that the extruder housing is made of.

We finally got it out.  The filament still stuck made it a bit more difficult but I don't think we damaged any of the internal parts of the housing.

@tanner-j

Congratulations! I wish you much success by assembling the extruderparts!
